Today at an event in New York, the CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, introduced three brand new Kindles, and the much anticipated Kindle Fire, a 7″ color tablet designed to connect customers with Amazon’s content. Let’s start quickly with the new Kindle E-Readers. The three all-new devices will run $79, $99, and $149, for the Kindle, Kindle Touch, and Kindle Touch 3G respectively. The bottom-end $79 Kindle has no keyboard and does not have a touchscreen. Instead, it has a navigational pad underneath the screen. It’s also even lighter than […]

Not in the least bit surprising is the first US$ pricing for the Acer S3 Ultrabook which has broken the $1000 price barrier. One retailer has confirmed an $899 price. Not only is Acer renowned for setting low price points but if you take a look at the spec sheet for the Acer Aspire S3 you’ll see that it’s missing a few features that could be important to many. No USB 3.0, No Ethernet port. Hybrid hard drive (Not full SSD.) The price appears to be for a Core i5 […]

Toshiba is announcing the Thrive 7 today, a 7″ Honeycomb tablet which is the second addition to the Thrive series. Toshiba described the Thrive 7 as a smaller version of the Thrive 10 and it will feature that same grip-friendly back. The Thrive 10 is a ‘utility’ tablet of sorts, featuring a range of full-sized ports. I was hoping that the Thrive 7 would retain these full-sized ports, but unfortunately they had to be shrunk to their smaller counterparts in order to fit inside of the Thrive 7. While other […]

Windows Phone 7.5 (AKA Mango) has been previewed by Microsoft for months now. Numerous bloggers have been given access to early builds of it, and it’s been pretty much revealed from head to toe… or so we thought. Today, Microsoft is officially announcing the rollout of Windows Phone 7.5. Along with that announcement comes the reveal of tethering functionality and a browser-based version of the application store which will offer an easy way to peruse the application store on a computer, much like https://market.android.com/. The ThinkPad Tablet is not going to be for everyone. I mention that now because, over the next few days, my postings on the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet may make it sound like the coming of the Holy Grail of gadgets. I am a particular type of user and, for me, this device mates very well with many of my use-cases. in fact, in many ways, this is the device that I have been waiting for for years. So much so that, with three other tablets in the house, I am hard […]

Some of the big name tech media have just received invitations from Apple for an iPhone press event to be held on October 4th, at which Apple’s iPhone 5 is expected to be announced. The invitation image shows the brilliance of Apple marketing. Yes, this is marketing. They market extremely well to the press and the press markets to their customers for them; that’s why Apple spends way less in advertising than many other tech companies, and has stock that trades far higher. A lot of people are betting that Apple will […]

It’s all too tempting to look at the Fusion Garage Grid10 and claim “vaporware”, but if Fusion Garage was able to get the Joojoo to market, then they sure as hell ought to be able to get the Grid10 out the door. The company responsible for the Grid10, which runs the ‘Grid’ Android-based OS, just hacked $200 from the initially announced price tag. Now priced at $299 for the cheapest model (WiFi-only, 16GB), the Grid10 seems a whole lot more inciting, even if I don’t exactly agree with Fusion Garage on a […]

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab 7.7 was announced at IFA 2011 at the very beginning of this month. Many were excited to hear about the high density Super AMOLED Plus display and the 1.4GHz dual-core CPU. Given the excitement, and the popularity of the original Galaxy Tab 7 in the US, it’s surprising that we saw reports that the Galaxy Tab 7.7 might not become available in the US. Fortunately, we can now say with confidence that the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will be reaching US shores, thanks to the FCC. Engadget dug up the FCC filing, and while […]
