My personal favorite in the current Ultrabook line-up, the Toshiba Z830, is said to be launching in the USA in late October according to a report by Taiwan News Interestingly, the report suggests that the entry level model will use a 64GB SSD to keep the price down to $1000. Sales targets were also given at 60 to 70K by the end of the year. Presumably that’s shipped units rather than end-customer sales. I’m visiting Toshiba Europe next week so will be able to bring you the latest from this […]

No doubt you’ve already heard of Siri, the voice control software that Apple is launching with the iPhone 4S. If you are late to the part, recap here. Apple is billing Siri not as “voice-control” but as a personal assistant that will perform tasks for you. The press is already lauding its impressive functionality. But how has Apple managed to make such a big splash over a feature that Android has had for some time now? To start, marketing has a lot to do with it. While Android bills voice-control […]

We’ve seen an HP Ultrabook ad and have some Digitmes rumors thrown in for good measure but I think this is the first time anyone with any authority has confirmed that HP will bring an Ultrabook to market. It’s Intel that have spilled the beans on what could be the definitive number of Ultrabooks launching in 2011. Intel Taiwan’s country manager Jason Chen said that Ultrabooks would be launching from Asus, Acer, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba. Looks like the South Korean LG Xnote P220 isn’t an Ultrabook in competing Taiwan […]

Today Apple announced Siri (along with that iPhone 4S thing), a vastly upgraded voice-control feature-set. Siri is exclusive to the iPhone 4S, rather than coming along with iOS 5, but I’m betting it isn’t restricted from a technical perspective. The iPad 2 features the same dual-core CPU as the iPhone 4S, so there’s no reason that it couldn’t make use of the new features. It’s a shame that Apple isn’t giving Siri over to the other iOS5 capable devices, including the iPad 1 and 2, the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and last two […]

If you’re looking to pick up the iPhone 4S before you are due for an upgrade, expect to pay a pretty penny, especially for the 64GB version. Here’s what you’ll be looking at: $449 – 16GB $549 – 32GB $649 – 64GB You can also still pick up the iPhone 4 off-contract for $349, or the 3GS for $199. Of course, if you wait for your upgrade, Apple will gladly hack $250 off of these prices for the iPhone 4S or iPhone 4, or drop the 3GS from $199 to […]

The Ultrabook timeline is padding out nicely now. The latest date is from Acer India who will have the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook in Croma stores from October 15th. This is the first time we’ve heard official news of availability so we can now expect global activities starting from the 10th (Asus in New York) through the following week or two to follow with availability very soon after. I’ve been invited to visit Toshiba Europe on the 11th so hopefuly they’ll have something solid to say about availability and there’s […]

I had time with the Series 7 Slate at IFA last month and was very impressed. Its simply the best Windows tablet I’ve ever used. When windows 8 comes along it will get even better. Light, powerful and thankfully, delivered with a dock and keyboard making it a true multi-scenario device. Those of you thinking about an Ultrabook for ultra-mobile activities might want to take a look at this because it uses the same Core i5 platform. It will especially appeal to photographers due to the high-brightness screen and hot-deskers […]
