Genuine Ultrabooks use integrated graphics which, while not as powerful as a ‘discrete’ GPU, allow the systems to be slim and power efficient. Even though the graphical capabilities of current Ultrabooks won’t satisfy those looking to play the latest blockbuster titles at full settings, there are still plenty of excellent games that will run perfectly on an Ultrabook. I’ve got six great games to share with you that will run great on your Ultrabook and offer hours of entertainment (all together hardly more expensive than a single blockbuster title!) For […]

Up to now we’ve worked out that 2nd-gen Ultrabooks will be available from June (our estimate,) that there are 100 Ultrabooks launching this year (Intel quote) and that the prediction is for about 20 million shipments in 2012 (Juniper Research projection.) A brief update from Digitimes runs along the same lines but says it has the information from the supply chain.

As I work through the days Ultrabook news there are a few articles here that I want to highlight. Feel free to contact us if you spot anything else you think we need to take a closer look at or add to the product databases. Free HP Ultrabook Taxis in London It looks like HP are doing exactly what I’d love to be doing; driving around in a 3G/WiFi equipped mini van with an Ultrabook. We’ve been hearing about 23rd April availability of Ivy Bridge for a while now but what does that mean and what does it mean for Ultrabooks? What’s clear is that there’s still some time to go before anyone is able to buy a 2nd-gen Ultrabook. Our estimate for the earliest models is now mid-June. There’s two things to consider. ‘Availability’ in this case means 1st shipping of the Ivy Bridge CPUs. Arrival at manufacturers production facilities comes some days after that and then manufacturers can ramp up their production lines […]

Western Europe will tie with North America as the largest Ultrabook market in 2016 with sales of around 90 million in total, says a report by Juniper Research, UK. Global annual sales are predicted to be 178 million for 2016. Sales will take-off in 2014. Full details are only available to those paying a hefty sum for the full report but Juniper give us a few things to think about in a video, a white paper, a press release and a list of contents…

In 2012 we’ll see the next generation of Ultrabooks featuring the Ivy Bridge platform and integrated HD4000 graphics. Existing Ultrabooks utilize HD3000 graphics which aren’t adequate for recently released blockbuster games (see the ‘Gaming’ section of our Samsung Series 5 review). HD4000 graphics are going to be very welcomed as part of the next generation of Ultrabooks for both gaming and video encoding/decoding purposes. A benchmark from Intel comparing HD2000 and HD4000 graphics gives us an idea of how HD4000 will perform, even if we don’t have a direct comparison to HD3000 […]

Launched just a few hours ago on the Intel ‘Inside Scoop’ site is the new interactive promotional video / game / adventure for Intel’s Ultrabooks. I’ve just spent a good 10 minutes playing around with it. It’s good! Due to be promoted in 50 countries and 26 languages, the new video is part of a much bigger Ultrabook marketing campaign that covers online, TV, in-shop and other areas. It’s said to be a ‘multi-hundred’ million dollar campaign and the biggest since Intel promoted the Centrino technology 10 years ago.
