At IDF Beijin 2012 GoWorld is showing off an Ultrabook prototype which uses a hybrid sliding design. Intel has been saying that one of the goals of the Ultrabook campaign is to bring the good features from the tablet realm to the laptop — things like instant-on, long standby time, thinness, and light weight. It’s no wonder that along for the ride is touchscreen functionality. Thanks to Windows 8 doing double-duty as a traditional desktop OS and also a touchscreen friendly OS with its Metro half, convertible Ultrabooks could actually […]

The HTC Shift. A fantastic design that failed due to overly heavy operating system, a short battery life, low screen resolution and limited Windows Mobile implementation. Over a year of rumors and false-starts the HTC Shift became the most viewed device on UMPCPortal by a long shot. Videos of it were always popular and even after it launched, communities grew quickly and great things were done with the device. The short battery life and high cost killed it in the end through and as smartphones took off and even due […]

One of the main aims of the Ultrabook is to reduce component count. High integration of silicon, removal of ‘sockets’, reductions in ports and simplification of the power subsystem are areas that Intel and its partners will be working hard to advance in the next 12 months. By reducing component count you make the Ultrabook simpler and cheaper to design and manufacturer. You also increase reliability. For the end user, it means smaller, thinner designs are possible too and there’s no question that we all like ‘thin.’ The current Ultrabook […]

Intel have just presented details of a Wireless Charging solution for Ultrabooks at IDF Beijing. They see a big potential market and look to have made good progress on a hard/soft solution that takes into account power considerations and regulatory requirements. Patents have been applied for!

Chinese computer maker Haier is showing off an Ultrabook this week at the 2012 Beijing Intel Develop Forum. The Haier Ultrabook is equipped with the lower end Intel Core i3-2367M processor (1.4GHz), making it less powerful, but likely more affordable, than Ultrabooks featuring Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs. NetbookNews.de is at IDF Bejing 2012 and got a hands on video of the Haier Ultrabook which you can see right here (video in German):

Back at CES Intel declared that 75 Ultrabook designs were in the pipeline. Today, at IDF, they gave a breakdown of that number by screen size. By my reckoning, you’ve got the following numbers…

Update: This is an Intel concept design called Letexo. As I filter through some of the information coming out of IDF in Beijing, this image strikes me as being significant. It’s a slider tablet design with a Windows 8 button. The design smacks of Dell but the logo on the images [Lxo, Lyo or Lko perhaps?] tells us that this is probably just a CAD concept. However, it looks fantastic and is something that could hit the Ultrabook sector soon.
