I call the Samsung XE700 an Ultraslate. It’s effectively an Ultrabook in a tablet form factor and it comes with a Bluetooth keyboard and a docking station. It’s one of the most flexible, usable tablets I’ve seen in a long time and it’s also a design milestone. This is the first time I’ve seen desktop-class computing in under 1KG of tablet with a decent (for tablet PCs) battery life. It’s a 2011 design too which means with Ivy Bridge, those designs can move forward with smaller, lighter form facts and/or […]

Dell have just kicked off a project with Ubuntu Canonical. Project Sputnik is a 6-month effort to try to pull together a solid Ubuntu build on a solid laptop, for developers. The Dell XPS13 has been chosen as the first target platform. We’re constantly getting questions from developers about which Ultrabook to buy but the problems is the word ‘developers.’ I’m a developer myself but the only tool I use is VI as I hack my PHP and HTML for the Ultrabooknews product database. Other, more serious, developers need source […]

Sony surprised us last week when they finally jumped into the Ultrabook market with the VAIO T series. Shortly thereafter we got confirmation the T series would also be offered with the next-gen Ivy Bridge CPU, which I’m particularly excited about given that Intel says the HD4000 graphics will be twice as fast as the existing generation of Sandy Bridge Ultrabooks. I’ve scoured the web for the best photos of the VAIO T series (T11 and T13 specs) that have yet been released. Here’s a high-res gallery of the slick […]

A 3D Multimedia Experience has kicked off in Germany with the help of the Ultrabook marketing campaign. Starting at the Maritime Museum in Hamburg, Germany it will be taking a live 3D projection and music show to many thousands of people. We’ve just watched the YouTube video of the experience and wow! You might have seen these 3D projections before but this is one of the best I’ve seen so far. Check out the two videos below.

“I have hands on for all the Sony Ultrabooks!” said the email from fellow Germany-based blogger Balazs Gal of Techfokus. Checking out his YouTube channel reveals three videos. That’s the Vaio T13, the Vaio T11 and a comparison video. Balazs also got confirmation, from an official representative, that there’s an Ivy Bridge version. Yes, the one we spotted! I’ll link you to the news articles here. (Translations: T13 and T11) Check them out for a good set of pics. The videos are embedded below. Update: The Sony T13 and […]

Dell seems to have found out that when you make a slim, powerful, and well-built computer, it sells! As is the case with the company’s XPS 13 Ultrabook which is currently has a month long shipping delay due to overwhelming demand, according to Dell.com. This demand will almost definitely lead to more Ultrabooks in the future from Dell, and possibly to a gaming Ultrabook from Dell’s Alienware gaming brand.

Pre-ordering for the Sony Vaio T Series has started with two retailers in Germany offering the base 11.6” version and quoting availability in two weeks. Pricing is as we reported earlier this week. Over at the Sony Germany web site, however, there’s some new information to be had on spec options. As I was writing this article an Ivy Bridge model popped up right in front of me. I some specs changing as I refresh so someone’s obviously working on it right now but that Ivy Bridge model seems fairly […]
