Posted on 10 September 2012

In just a few hours the press will be gathering in San Francisco for the warm-up to IDF 2012. The Intel Developer Forum is the most important of the years IDF events as it represents the start of a new wave of marketing for Intel and allows analysts to piece together a picture of what Intel will get up to in 2013. In terms of Ultrabooks we already know that we’ve got Windows 8, touch and Haswell coming but there’s more to it than that. Here’s what you can expect […]

Vizio’s Ultrabook Stumbles out of the Gate According to All Things D Hands-on

Posted on 06 September 2012

Bonnie Cha from All Things D spent some time with Vizio’s “Thin+Light” Ultrabook CT15-A1, the 15.6″ variant of the company’s first entry into the Ultrabook space. According to Cha, the Thin+Light Ultrabook’s svelte styling is unfortunately coupled with a number of design issues. The CT15 might sport a sharp 1080p display, but it looks like Vizio might need a little more computer manufacturing experience before it can make a dent in the profits of more established companies like HP, Asus, Samsung, and others.

Nokia Lumia 920 – Details on the Camera and Floating Lens

Posted on 05 September 2012

We’ve got a few more details on the Nokia Lumia 920 for you including more specs on the camera which is an F2.0 device that can take in “five times more light” than competing smartphones. Impressive! The floating lens is effectively a camera unit (not lens) mounted on springs which we assume dampened in some way. Update: This is an active system driven from data obtained by a gyroscope. Here’s a demo that Nokia was showing at the press event. The images are designed to show the difference between the […]

Windows 8 Lenses. Applications get Tight Integration in Camera Application

Posted on 05 September 2012

I’ve just watched the introduction of Windows 8 Lenses – part of the camera in Windows 8 phones. IN essence is allows an application (either built-in or 3rd party) to both integrate with the viewfinder (by adding functionality), control the camera and tag images with an application so that the application remains associated with the image. Combined with sharing in Windows 8 it looks like this takes WIndows 8 Phione forward as potentially (it depends 100% on developers) the most creative cameraphone platform out there. Very smart!

Floating Lens Technology Debuts in Nokia Lumia 920

Posted on 05 September 2012

I posted just half an hour ago on Google Plus… “Stabilisation is a huge challenge for cameraphones because there’s not enough processing power to do it well enough in software and no room for optical stabilisation.” Nokia may have solved the problem with “Floating Lens Technology” on the Nokia Lumia 920. Technical details are unavailable right now but I’m excited to see that as it will a) allow slower shutter speeds (more light) b) reduce the need for xenon flash to freeze motion c) allow for longer zoom d) reduce […]

Posted on 04 September 2012

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U310 is the comany’s first stab at a second generation Ivy Bridge Ultrabook. Not quite a direct refresh of the premium-positioned Lenovo U300S, the U310 is a budget/value option which sticks with a Core i5 processor, integrated graphics, 1366×768 display and a hybrid hard drive to keep costs down. The step from Sandy Bridge and HD3000 graphics to Ivy Bridge and HD4000 promises enhanced gaming, but how does the rest of the U310 Ultrabook fare? Step inside our full review to find out.
