I previously highlighted AMD Temash as a potentially good platform for a mobile Windows 8 experience and after my first tests today I’m more convinced that we’ll see some interesting high-value Windows 8 designs including low-cost touch-enabled tablets. I’ve just received an Acer Aspire V5-122P running on the Temash platform (A6-1450) and have some first test results and thoughts for you in a video. The Acer Aspire V5 122P is an 11.6” sub-notebook running on an AMD Temash processor which I’ve highlighted before as being potentially interesting for mobile Windows 8 because it, theoretically, offers performance that sits between netbooks and Ultrabooks while offering very good efficiency. In general, people don’t like sliders that much but when we tested the Sony Vaio Duo 11 recently we were really impressed by it’s ability as a pen-driven slate in easel mode. Sony might be ready to offer a larger version of the hybrid Ultrabook if a leaked video is anything to go by and we think it could be a Haswell-based 3rd-gen Ultrabook.

The Acer Aspire V5 has always been a notebook to keep an eye on. It’s not quite an Ultrabook but comes with a very nice price which probably explains why it appears to have been a big seller. Variants range from an AMD C-70 version with an 11.6” screen at netbook pricing up to a Core i5 with 15.6″-inch touchscreen and 750GB drive. Acer has updated its range of  Aspire V series notebooks with new V5 models that come in various configurations and also introduced its new V7 series Ultrabook range.    

Intel has just launched Silvermont,  the new architecture core for Atom-based platforms. Silvermine will be used in the Bay Trail platform that will replace Clovertrail for Windows 8. Intel promises significant improvements in efficiency and products for the holiday season.

The Acer Aspire P3 Ultrabook, that’s actually a tablet with a keyboard accessory, is available for pre-order. We picked up on some of the specs of this low-cost tablet but here’s the full specification run-down. It looks like it will be the first Ultrabook to use the new Y-Series down-clocked lower-TDP processors.
