I tested the Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch with SSD recently. It was a fantastic bit of kit but lacked a few features. The 1366×768 screen was a bit 2012 and there was no keyboard backlighting. When I saw that the Samsung ATIV Book 5 was launching I was hopeful that we’d be seeing the necessary upgrades. Alas, it appears that the Book 5 is nothing more than a re-positioning exercise.

Acer announced a ‘new’ tablet for the USA today. The Acer Aspire P3 is, as far as we can tell, the W700 with the new keyboard case seen at MWC this year. I’ve been collecting data on the distribution of mobile internet device screen sizes since 2009 when the first handheld computers arrived with Origami and UMPCs. At that time there were about 240 SKUs being offered in Germany and most were netbooks. Today there are about 1200 products being offered and the 7-inch category has exploded.

There are two Ultrabooks in the wings that get more search hits than any other Ultrabook on the Ultrabooknews website at the moment – the Lenovo Thinkpad Helix and the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 11S. Intel Iris and Intel Iris Pro have just been announced as the new brands for the top two tiers of Intel’s 4th-gen Core processor (Haswell) graphics. Iris will appear in Ultrabooks but, surprisingly, only on a 28W TDP processor. It indicates that there are some higher-level processing options coming to Ultrabooks. Other 4th-gen Core processors for Ultrabooks get HD 5000 graphics.
