Today at IDF 2013 in San Francisco, Intel is announcing it’s next-generation of low-power Atom, Pentium, and Celeron processors, codenamed ‘Bay Trail’. Intel says that Bay Trail processors will be suitable for tablets, laptops, AIO desktops, and “sleek mobile devices.”

The T440s is a business Ultrabook that offers some unique features. The 1920×1080 matt screen with touch is rare, as is the hot-swap battery feature. A 24Wh battery lives in the unit and there’s a selection of 24Wh, 47Wh and 72Wh battery packs that can be added to that. With Haswell and the extended battery you’ve got some very impressive battery life in a 2KG package.

The Acer W510, a nice Clovertrail-based Windows tablet has what I call ‘bearable’ Windows performance. AMD Temash, the quad-core platform for low-cost notebooks has what I call ‘good mainstream’ performance. It looks like BayTrail’s CPU performance will go up to 3X that of the Clovertrail platform and equal that of AMD Temash quad-core. At IDF, which started for me today, we’ll hear a lot more about BayTrail and we expect to see device launches in the next 24-48hours.

I’ve been using the Mobile Reporting Kit V12 over the last 5 days and it’s been working well. The challenge was to work through a day without any cables. No charging! The Harris Beach Ultrabook, Nokia Lumia 925 plus a backup phone (Nokia 808) and a camera (Lumix FZ150) worked together to give me my best mobile media studio yet.

I just saw a presentation by Intel on the future of batteries, energy and small devices and I didn’t realize the research had got this far. We can now harvest mW of energy from the area on and around a small device. It doesn’t sound a lot but look at functions like NFC which use micro-Watts of power. Battery technology isn’t advancing quickly. It’s because the chemistry is tough and expensive or profit margins are at risk or even that it’s simply shackled by political control. Ambient energy could be […]
