Some of you are going to receive a Windows 8.1 update tomorrow. If you’ve got a laptop without a touchscreen you might be in the ‘so what’ camp but if you’ve got a touch tablet you’ll have happy fingers. If you’ve got Connected Standby and 3G, there’s a little extra treat in there for you. Microsoft have been highlighting Windows 8.1 features in a blog series recently and today we get to hear about Movie Moments, a new Movie editing app alone with big updates to Fresh Paint, Photo and […]

Intel says that there are 50 Baytrail design wins under development and believes that 10 Baytrail systems will be on the shelf by Black Friday, 29th November 2013, but that most of those will be Android tablets. Third-Quarter results were announced by Intel yesterday and while we won’t go into financial details, it’s interesting to hear the relevant earnings call comments from the new CEO Brian Krzanich: There are about 50 design wins on Baytrail. (We assume across all versions.) “About half” of the 50 design wins are 2-in-1 devices. […]

A 1KG Ultrabook is an engineering feat. The Toshiba Z830, at 1.1KG still surprises 2 years after launch. Since then though we haven’t seen many attempt to break the 2.2 pound mark. Only the NEC Lavie Z, an expensive Asia-only model, and the almost unknown Inhon Blade Carbon have launched in the 13.3” bracket. The Sony Vaio Pro 13 is a far more globally available product though. It’s not only lightweight, it offers a FullHD Sony Triluminous touchscreen, a good set of specifications and, although the battery is smaller than […]

Fujitsu announced a slew of new Windows 8 devices a few days ago and among them is what will probably be the poster boy for Bay Trail tablets – with an Atom Z3770, 4GB RAM and a 10.1-inch screen with a special touch.

Baytrail-based tablets and 2-in-1s are our focus here for the time being. Baytrail-T products will be available next week and following that we’ll see Baytrail-M products but while that’s happening, Clovertrail-based devices are available at ever-improving prices. Baytrail doesn’t mean that these ‘old’ products suddenly become useless and as prices drop, you can find some really nice bargains out there. Windows 8.1 will improve them, Windows Store will make them more useful over time.

There are nine Baytrail products about to launch and I’ve detailed them all in this post. If money wasn’t an issue and if all of these mobile Windows 8 options were available tomorrow, which one would you choose? The first of these new tablets and 2-in-1 devices will be available next week. Pre-order has already started!

There’s no doubt that the ASUS Zenbook infinity is a fantastic Ultrabook. It’s the most popular Ultrabook in our database and has been for a while now. It looks absolutely fantastic, weighs around 1400 grams and packs some serious specifications. It’s also expensive, unless you go for the low-end version, the UX301LA-C4003H.

I’ve got one of these with 3G and I can vouch for it as a very good Clovertrail-based 2-in-1. I’m putting together a more detailed article about the ‘old’ Clovertrail tablets but as I was scanning through prices I found this Samsung ATIV 500T which stands out as one of the best deals by far in Europe. 399 pounds buys you the Tablet with Digitizer and Keyboard dock. Update: It looks like the price is getting hidden because it’s out of stock. View all prices and you’ll find the Amazon […]
