You’ve heard about Typhoon Haiyan. It hit our 7th biggest country readership and the disaster appears to be getting worse as clean water availability becomes critical. 2 million people need emergency food supplies. Click the infographic on the right for more information. As a father I always put the children first which is why I recommend donating to UNICEF. 4 million children have been affected by Haiyan. UNICEF accept donations from most countries. Go here, choose your country and donate, please. If you’re in the Philippines, note that […]

The Atom chip. Windows 8. For those seeking productivity and portability these technologies promised to fulfil that need but ultimately fell short. Intel’s Bay Trail CPU and Windows 8.1 are designed to finally meet those needs but do they really combine to produce the perfect storm for Windows tablets? The Dell Venue 8 Pro is the first of the new breed of Windows tablets out of the gate, does it have what it takes to satisfy the demanding needs of the professional on the go?

The first Bay Trail tablets are now arriving, starting with the Dell a few weeks ago and now the Lenovo Miix2, Toshiba Encore are up on Amazon.com, the Dell Venue 11 Pro on Dell.com and Amazon plus Dell gives you 32GB for free!

Three of the hottest convertibles around at the moment are all available with full Core i5 processors. They’re netbook size and weight but offer laptop-class processing with 5+hrs of battery life. I’ve analysed the Sony Vaio Tap 11, Microsoft Surface Pro and Dell Venue 11 Pro and written an article over at Ultrabooknews that highlights the prices and specification differences. Of course if you’re interested in lower-cost and good-enough processing power you can get the Dell Venue 11 Pro in a Baytrail version which is thinner and lighter that its […]

The Fujitsu T904 is my kind of Ultrabook. I’m a big fan of the swivel form factor despite that ever present issue of the flex and possible weak-point that the single-point screen hinge introduces. You wouldn’t believe how useful it is to flip the screen round just to show someone an image. With a digitizer you’ve also got an impressive lay-flat tablet. If you’ve got a non-slip surface, the T904 even works in easel mode.

These three very interesting products define the new PC. Highly dynamic, lightweight, touch-enabled, long battery life 2-in-1’s. Many of you have these three on your list. They are the #1, #2 and #3 most viewed Ultrabook alternatives and ride high in the Ultrabook and Ultra-Mobile PC category. The Sony Vaio Tap 11, Dell Venue Pro 11 and Surface Pro 2 are all excellent products and it’s tough to choose between them but there are definite differences. Read on…

I’m testing a couple of Belkin docks right now with my Ultrabooks and they’re excellent solutions for hot-desking. It’s saved my the use of one laptop as I now take one laptop between two desks rather than leave two in situ. Plugable have some similar docking solutions too. They use DisplayLink hardware and drivers to create screens that work over USB with soundcards and more. We’ve been testing it with Atom since 2008 but plugable have an excellent video that shows it working really well, almost transparently, with four external […]

It is possible to feel confident that you’ll last the day without your charger. I experienced it for the first time with Haswell and with the Fujitsu S904 it’s possible you could even do a two-day + hotel stretch without a charger. It’s not an Ultrabook because of the battery bump but at only 1.5KG it’s probably got the biggest battery / weight ratio of any laptop or Ultrabook.
