Lenovo’s first 11-inch Yoga device ran RT on an ARM-architecture. We ignored it. The second 11-incher was the 11S with Core CPU options. It’s still available with Haswell and a rather impressive power/battery life ratio. The latest Yoga 2 11 is more consumer focused and used the Baytrail-M platform. It’s a difficult one to position between an UltraMobile and an Ultrabook because on one hand it’s Baytrail (Pentium branded) and on the other it weights 2.9 pounds. It’s much like the new Sony Vaio FIT 11A flip.

Intel had a great keynote at CES2014 yesterday and while a lot of it was outside the scope of reporting here, the Quark-based Edison PC is worth mentioning. Picture first… That’s it! An SD-card sized PC / development board. It’s running a 400Mhz dual-core Quark CPU built on a 22nm process. There’s a WiFi and Bluetooth LE module, memory, storage and interfaces. It may not have a video controller but it runs Linux and the idea is that it has endless possibilities at the newer edges of the Internet. Intel […]

Sony have announced a new Vaio Fit 11A Flip PC with the same convertible screen as on other Flip models. (We reviewed the 14-inch model here. ) There’s a great set of specs and a good price, if you’re prepared to take a small hit on the processor features.

Just minutes ago at the CES keynote, Intel announced, briefly, that they have a dual-OS platform ready. Windows and Android on one device. The live demo worked! We know little right now apart from the fact that the Android part will include additional security. In an on-stage demo the switch time was near-instant. Have Intel developed a better solution than ASUS, Insyde? Does it have a true dual-virtual container? The exciting thing is that Intel have the best access to hardware drivers so getting all the hardware mapped through […]

Dual-OS computing has been a hot topic recently but Bluestacks have been in the game for a few years with their ‘runtime’ that executes in the Windows app space. Bluestacks are now announcing that they will take that further forward to offer a complete Android OS wrapper for Windows. Like previous versions it’s going be best when it’s optimised and offered as part of the original product and there could be some gotchas but we should pay attention because, if it works, it will be better than quick-switch or dual-boot.

In the AMD press conference at CES today we saw some performance figures for Mullins and Beema APUs that are due soon from AMD. Mullins targets fanless Baytrail-T products. Beema targets the Baytrail-M sector of entry-level desktops, 2-in-1s and larger ‘value’ tablets. No details were given about timescales but the performance figures look interesting.
