Our iPad Is Here. Coverage at Carrypad.

ipad-ben-1It wasn’t an easy decision to make but it made sense. Our iPad (that’s the one that Ben and I have bought for Carrypad) will be spending it’s life over in the capable hands of Ben over in Honolulu. It turned up today and Ben’s already posted some unboxing pics. He’s planning to get rolling with a series of usage articles and we hope that we can offer you a useful perspective on the device. Ben has a lot of experience with UMPCs and netbooks and he’s also an iPhone owner so he should have no trouble getting used to the iPad. We’re also planning to learn from the iPad and to see what elements of the device are missing from other devices and if the iPad has potential as a full, productive mobile device.

Although the iPad carries the soul that the Origami team were searching for back in 2006 we’ve decided to do the coverage at our consumer-focused sister site Carrypad. We might bring some tech thoughts over here in a few special articles (the iPad runs in 2.5w 10hrs in 700gm! That’s something I want to talk about soon at UMPCPortal) but at the moment, everything is going on over there.

should i say now … it is running so long time because its a mere frame for a large iphone battery, or it had to be so large to fit the battery, or , or …. steve kicked out all other connectivity and storage to gain place for the large battery (compared to netbooks – in this case we also should talk about asus eg, with also 10 hrs in a fully equiped seashell and an atom processor, not an arm for mobilephones. i have the slight idea they did a better energy job than steve – just to put a few things in place)

What are you talking about? the battery this, the battery that!!! Please make us understand what the hell you ore trying to say.Because From my Point of View, even you don’t know what the hell you are trying to say!!!

  5. animatio says:

the ipad consists mainly of a large screen and a large battery inside the shell. no periperals, no place for big storage devices

I honestly don’t see the point of this device. This is a glorified couch net surfing device for lazy sunday evenings. I mean, you cannot even multi-task (listen music + surfing the net) on it for Pete’s sake. So, if all we can do with it is to surf the net, read ebooks and MSN around with the mates… what exactly is wrong with the existing Atom netbooks? you get a full-size Windows environment so you can multitask and run proper PC software, plus you get a physical keyboard!

Again, I repeat: I just don’t see the point of this device… plus it’s not cheap at all either!

Is this another Mac Book Air? another marketing stunt by Apple with plenty of sizzle and too little steak to back it up?

  7. Andrea says:

    @ Another guy

What are you talking about?? you should inform yourself a little bit better….YES you can surf and listen to music at the same time…. yes u can listen to music and send emails at the same time…and yes you can write notes and listen to music at the same time (Just like the iPhone and the iPod Touch out now)…..as a matter of fact you can listen to music running ANY app on the iTunes Store…

And no you cannot only urf the net, read ebooks and MSN around with the mates… but as app have demonstrated (Sketchbook, things and more to come) you can create content on the go with full blown app designed to take full advantage of MULTI touch.

Running proper PC software might seems like a pro… but for many is a cons… running a full blown app optimized for 2+ cores is not something you would like on a single core subpar CPU as the atom, it might be better to design app for the device!!

  8. Lucien says:

The another guy was talking about that the OS doesn’t allow multiple programs to run. In other words no truly multi-tasking.
Second problem is that flash doesn’t work so you can’t view youtube video’s (and lot’s of other stuff). Also you cannot really watch decently full HD video’s (check Apple’s spec site and note the max bitrate limit for 720p).
There are a couple of other downsides (extra subscription price and screen not well visible outdoors).

I’m sure there’s a market for it but I can see that a decent PC slate or netbook will be more versatile and cheaper. That said I have a feeling it will sell well anyway…

  9. Andrea says:

I agree that it’s not for everyone… but then again.. people should be more informed…you can watch youtube… even without flash….as you can on the iPhone ;)

  10. anon says:

Chipy, you mean “spending its life”, right?

@Another guy: Core apps like the music player can be run in the background, but that’s about it. Indeed, no 3rd party twitter app running in the background ready to notify you when something happens while you surf etc.

Could it do Youtube later if they manage to give the iPad’s browser HTML5 support? Or does it already have that?

  11. Thadon10 says:

I Feel this is A good start for apple however it’s not really A practical device in my opinion. No real multitask! Listening to music while you are on the web is considered (LoL) multitasking! However If you Want to say have 3 Programs open in in the background, On the Ipad, that what I would call wishful thinking (like I was when I had the IPhone)because it Just wont do it. What will make this system fly will be the same thing that Shot the Iphone to super stardom, in one word “Apps” & Apple pretty much have that department Under full control :). As for me I’m looking Forward to the HP State. That 8.9″ system will do full 1080P. Let the games begin.

  12. Andrea says:

    @ anon

the iPhone OS (on every supported device) supports youtube so you’ll notice iPhone ipod touch and iPad will see youtube with no problem (Actually youtube converted every video in non flash format for the iPhone i think last year).

As a matter of fact the video app built in the OS brings you to youtube ;)

As for multitasking.. i would wait for OS 4 before crying about it…. :D:D

  13. AP says:

So why not wait until OS 4 comes out..
No multitasking for now, no USB, no SD, no removable battery, no flash support, pay $25/month to AT&T for 3G, weighs 1.5 naked makes difficult holding for long time as ereader, cannot watch videos >720P, probably no Divx support not sure, Apps are more expensive than iphone starting at $5.99 and starting price 499 for 16GB HDD + $100 for 3G version.
    No Thanks..

  14. chuckdaly says:

Outside of Starbucks/couch web surfing, what circumstance would someone use it? Would you really leave your notebook at home and take the ipad with you for vacation or a business trip? I find it too expensive and limiting for a media device, and lacking utility to replace a notebook or netbook. I see Macbook Air written all over this device.

With terms like,”Speedy,Fast,Quick” being thrown around, what were bloggers and reviewers expecting? A smartphone OS with no multitasking, should be nothing less than lightning fast on anything using a netbook CPU/GPU.

The iPad isn’t meant for most of the people that frequent this site. There are already hundreds of laptops, netbooks, tablets and UMPCs available that better fit your needs. I think of the iPad as a content consumption and light communication device. Recently I bought a used HP tc1100 Tablet PC. In my mind the tc1100 is a content creation, content consumption and advanced communication device.
