Good work, Pocketables! The team over there have picked up two news items on the Viliv N5 today. Together, they give us a good indication that the product is ready for pre-sale.

News item number 1 shows the Viliv N5 being advertised in Japan with XP (Standard Edition) and Windows 7 (Premium edition)

News item number 2 shows the Viliv N5 advertised by Dynamism in the latest Laptop magazine with 3G and 4G options.

We’ve also spotted the ‘Standard’ edition at GeekStuff4U, indicating a mid-June availability but given the fact these availability always slips, we’re still expecting July availability.

We will be meeting with Viliv at Computex early next week so we’re expecting to hear full details, prices and availability. Finally! We’ve got our fingers crossed that we can walk away with a review sample too so stay tuned for news of a live open review when we get back after Computex.

Great news. But forgive me if I’m wrong. Were viliv targeting for low price device? I heard the japan non premium version cost around 700$ ( with no 3g if I’m right) any prediction how much for the us version?

  5. Scoobie says:

1.3ghz is so 2009 and sucks for useability
    Yet another umpc design compromise.
    Good form factor though

  6. Chippy says:

On a personal level, i’m also dissapointed. I wanted 1.6Ghz, Fast SSD and 1GB to enable a smooth Windows 7 experience. At 1.3Ghz, XP wouldbe the best choice for me.

  7. Lucien says:

Reason is probably that it’s a repackaged S5 with a keyboard. I think it has 1GB but there should be a 2GB option.

  8. Minions says:

Hoped they would launch a 1.6ghz soon (as it was one of the models on the show floor) I’m sure they will, its whether I can hold off longer to wait for it… I believe if I don’t wait however I will end up regretting it in the long run.

  9. John in Norway says:

My SC3 has a 1.33MHz CPU, dead slow hard drive, 2 GB RAM and on the whole it works fine for what I do, even voice dictation. I think the SSD will be the bigger factor. It’s just a shame that they’re so small and expensive.

  10. Aaron says:

We shall see, I’ve seen Viliv PRs state that the processor will go up for 1.8 GHz, so we just need to see what options are provided. 1GB of RAM is more than enough for Windows 7 so I’m not worried about it.

  11. Ravellar says:

    Yea, I want it now!!!!!!!

  12. Ben says:

As I mentioned on Pocketables, while I am looking forward to it, my biggest concern is the lack of storage – my S5 with its 60gig hard drive is horribly small for what I use it for – Films, Anime and E-reader. The use of SSDs is fine, but 32 and even 64gig is lacking in size for me – I would die for a 120gig hard drive option (even if that makes me less than ‘leet’)

The other concerns are valid too. the 1.33ghz atom and 1gig RAM is fine for XP, but will really lag on 7. I would have preferred a convertable but I have my S5 for that. And seriously, will these companies learn that glossy screens make it impossible to actually use these machines outside?

Plus up to 12 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB cards (48GB, 96GB, or 192GB respectively) and you should be able to carry anything you want.

At least that is my plan.

  14. tsog says:

I don’t really see what’s all the buzz around the N5. It looks like the Fujitsu UH900, except with lower specs.
And from the look of it, the price isn’t much lower either.

  15. drifter77 says:

@tsog: it’s definitely better than the UH900 in terms of build quality, battery life and has HSPA.

  16. tsog says:

Depends on who you ask, I guess. I need something faster than the 1.33ghz cpu and the 1gb ram it offers.

  17. Another fellow says:

I’m perfectly happy with 1.33 Ghz, 1Gb RAM and Win XP. This device is meant to be used as a mobility device for professionals. This is not for media consumers (that’s what the iPad is for). The N5 is more for road warriors, bloggers on the move, etc. And for that, the N5 is perfect. I am just not happy at the $700 price tag.

so it will be expansiver than thought…

  19. Hobo says:

I’m hoping for faster CPU versions. I could forgo the touchscreen and WWAN for it.

If only a large company like Dell or HP would make these then we could customize the specs so there wouldn’t be “no [insert feature here], fail” remarks.
