Viliv X10 Windows Slate – Capacitive Touch and Active Digitizer?

Posted on 11 June 2010, Last updated on 31 July 2015 by

Digging around on Viliv’s site, you can find the Viliv X10 Windows spec sheet which shows a different design than the one that we saw at Computex.

viliv x10 (windows)

This rendering is actually looking quite nice, but we won’t necessarily see this design. Viliv says that, while the X10 (Android) slate will be shipped by them, this X10 (Windows) slate is a design that may or may not be sold to other manufacturers that will apply their own branding.

Interestingly, Viliv’s specs sheet mentions that the screen is capacitive with “pen input inch. It’s possible to do multi-touch on a resistive screen and thus “pen input inch would simply mean using a stylus. However, because the screen is capacitive, the only way to get pen input would be with an active digitizer (or a capacitive stylus, but that’d be a gimmick on Viliv’s part) which would mean a pretty awesome digital notetaking experience on this device unlike some of the other slates we’re seeing. It’s possible that the wording on the spec sheet was a mix-up for this early concept, though it’d be great to see an active digitizer on this device.

Wasn’t the same combination listed on the HP Slate specs? Maybe there is some affordable solution coming to the market … at least I hope so.

    Let’s get a movement going.

I’ve just requested preorder information (which I realize doesn’t exist) from USA_sales at myviliv.com.

I urge every pen oriented person to do the same.

Since my OQO died, I’m making do with a resistive touch screen and it’s marginal, at best. I’d gladly pay several thousand dollars for a tablet with a dual digitizer screen that weighs less than a kilo.

How many actual tablets which promised dual entry systems have actually been delivered? Hate getting worked up and yet we see nothing out of it. *gives HP the evil eyes*

My lenovo x200 tablet works really well with a touch input and it’s active digitizer… I love it and wish more companies would add the functionality. it’s just not a tablet unless you can use a pen for inking…

viliv you’d better not let this sell for $600 each..

and 30w… 8hours here potentially means 4hours in practical use..

here, folks, another overpriced sluggish battery draining handheld device for you road worriors
enjoy your trip while carrying the power adapter without a socket nearby

    way to go, viliv

Err, you have no idea about Viliv devices at all do you? My Viliv S5 which claimed 5-6 hours battery life still has over 5 hour usage regular web usage after nearly a year of owning it.

The first time I tested, Warcraft III running alongside with WLAN streaming data for over 3 hours I still had 30-40% battery left.

    Addendum:

The only problem is that the current Z series Atom kinda sucks in light of so-called “Netbook” Pine Trail and the next generation Z series Oak Trail. Too bad we won’t see Oak Trail until early next year.

Imagine the Intel X18-M SSD on a UMPC…

Lenovo has on sale the X200 and X201 tablet devices that have both multi-touch and an “Active Digitizer” installed. The capacitive screen is disabled just as the pen comes within close proximity of the screen and is then enabled as it moves away. This is great technology that I hope will be adapted by other manufactures going forward and I think is what is being used by Viliv with this X10

Goodness gracious “Viliv” make the darn thing and put it on the market. Just make sure that it is crazy thin as well, like the iPad.

Just thought I should add the Lenovo in action with both pen and capacitive multi-touch working.

My wallet is still open Viliv….., just waiting for you to start shipping the X10.

My wallet is also open for X10 the double input.

I just got a reply to my request for preorder information:

As you know this products just unveiled at Computex last week, so mass production is targeting to late Q3.

  15. admin says:

Remember that Viliv are planning to sell this design and not produce it themselves. I also suspect that any customer would want to wait for Oaktrail and therefore I wouldnt expect this to appear before Q1 2010 with specs changed to the OEMs requirements.
I guess Viliv are looking to sell this direct to carriers.

Hi, looks great from the specs, hoping it does get released. I managed to find the product page on Viliv’s site last week and posted on JKK’s site.

I got another email after asking for preorder information:

“For X10, actually we brought up two O/S version to Taiwan Computex, that was Window & Android respectively, but none of peoples showed interest on Window/Atom version due to lack of optimization, so we have decided to skip Window/Menlow then migrate to Window/Oaktrail, that was agreement among us, MSFT & Intel.

I means that Window version X10 won’t be launched in this year due to OakTrail schedule, however there is no change on X10 Android schedule, QDM on August, launch in mid Q4.”

So if we ever see the Windows version it won’t be for a while.
