Shame. While the Libretto W100 looks good and opens the mind, that second touchscreen is obviously more for the marketing than for the people that were attracted to the original Librettos. Like a diamond-encrusted iPhone, the W100 seeks out media attention rather than addressing the issue of getting things done when on the move. Not only is the hardware keyboard missing but the battery life is going to be an issue as this appears to be running on a laptop processor. Imaging trying to use this anywhere near a window – the backlight and CPU requirements would be huge.
I’d love to test it out and maybe I’m being too harsh and blinkered but I can almost see the summary now: “Great concept…for marketing. Now let’s stop trying to impress the touch-friendly media and get back to some serious mobile productivity.”

“touch-friendly”? more like touch-lusting. Much like the the fashion industry, it seems that non-touch devices are “last years fashion”.
Forgive the link-whoring, but Toshiba told us that we could expect “up to 3.5hrs” runtime from the W100. That simply doesn’t seem good enough. I wish they’d gone with a Tegra 2 chip, slimmed down the OS to support Courier-style digital notebook functionality and then hopefully brought the price right down :(

Fully agree Chris, where as the Courier concept from Microsoft had good inking functionality for note taking and organisation the Libretto W100 serves no great productivity purpose. A gimmick in my view.
The Courier had better inking functionality? It was a concept guys. A concept could have teleporting functionality if you wanted it to.
You make it sound easy. “Develop me a new OS from scratch, give me two screens, more battery life, but bring the price down.”
As a concept yes, it was designed with both pen and touch input. I know what your saying, a concept is always a concept until you get a real world device to try but its an interesting comparison.
We all know what ‘up to 3.5hrs’ means! For an 800gm device you’re looking at a 25wh battery that could easily be run dry in 2hrs by a Core processor and two backlights!
P.S. Always happy to have good links dropped into comments !
3.5 hours means 2 hours really when you consider typing on the virtual keyboard would take a lot longer than a physical one!
I am sure that typing on a virtual keyboard gets tiresome VERY fast.
Another Fellow, I think that you and other fellows pointing out the usability limit of a haptic keyboard are right on. With a smooth surface that limit is very nearly absolute. The problem is the key layout. get away from that and the virtual keyboard will take off.
Toshiba’s UMPC with the double touchscreen —- libretto W100

Intel U5400 processor, 62GB SSD. When the loaded standard battery is weight 699g (running time of 2 hours), and the high-capacity battery to be running about 4.0 hours, weight 819g.
While in the outdoors, no desk, no chair, that you need to stand-up operating UMPC; really is this Libretto W100 went to a better design??
I had disappointedly seen Jananese UMPC in ancient times.
I had disappointedly seen Japanese UMPC at ago, if it was compared to Korean UMPC. I think that Japanese should go to do better.
I think what would make this device very interesting is one active digitiser, and one capacitive multi touch display. When you want to ink use the digitiser, when you want to touch spin it round 180 degrees and touch away. The best of both worlds!
Thanks, I’m hoping that someone with knowledge of the power requirements and the software stack involved will reply and give some idea of the feasibility of your suggestion.
When in the outdoors, you could be needed to stand-up and the both hands took holding an UMPC, which not sit a chair, apparently this was not an indoor familiar way —- that you have sat a chair faced desk. I think that manufacturers need to consider this situation at an UMPC of designed, that is a ULTRA MOBILE PC, but not simple to imitate a notebook!
The Japanese UMPCs were a same type —— top cover LCD + Keyboard underside, without an exception, these are obviously Notebook traces, no innovation, it is a rock-bound way of thinking.
If Libretto W100 of second touchscreen is a demountable way (can also turn into a single screen UMPC of 7-inch), which would be a better thing in the multi-application of the smart way, but it was not.
U5400 processor not bad, this is meritorious designed in a 7-inch UMPC.
I dream of a Libretto W100 like this:
1. the second touchscreen is taken a demountable way (can freely switch into a single screen UMPC of 7-inch), which would be a better thing in the multi-application of the smart way.
2. the UMPC needs to be added a HDMI input port (not only an output port), makes that UMPC is also able to serve as a mobile monitor of 7-inch, which its computing system can be suspended during a monitor mode.
In the market, not only a mobile monitor of 7-inch was very lacking, also followed to enhance for the application value in the UMPC.
3. Another mobile processor —– Atom n550 will be worth to wait.
PS. another bad point, which not only this Libretto W100 is no HDMI output port, also no any port to an exterior monitor. If you went to travel into a hotel-room, over there got a HDTV (or a monitor) to be a HDMI input port of available, unfortunately your Libretto W100 is unable to enjoy on a large screen.
