Asus R2H unboxing images.

Posted on 03 October 2006, Last updated on 08 January 2015 by

Just in case you haven’t seen the unboxing pictures yet, check out Mobile01 or SlashGear for the details.

It really does look nice and as long as those buttons work well and there are no nasty battery life suprises, its going to take first position in the ultra mobile PC league for consumer oriented devices.

German resellers are now quoting 11th Oct for the first deliveries and I’m badgering ASUS like mad to get one ASAP!

Still no luck from US retailers. I’ve been talking with MobilePlanet.com to no avail about getting one to try out.

    Hi Steve:

In the Mobile01 site in Trad. Chinese, the author compared the battery and the WinXP installation disc pack to show how thin it is.

BTW, another rumor: ASUS is going to deliver another UMPC powered by VIA’s CPU and chipset. Just wait and see if it’s true in the future.

    BRs!

  3. Pc_Madness says:

When oh when will this stuff get to Australia? :( A VIA cpu would definitely be nice.. only problem is I want it now.. not in 4 months time. *sigh*

I can’t believe this, finally got mine, the package is unbelievable, at 799 pounds it’s around 100 more than the current q1, but in the box i got 2 batteries (thick and thin ones), tv antenna, foldable keyboard, 6 cd-roms; autoroute, recovery cd-rom, mobile theatre, info pen+other 2 (i don’t know what they are), mouse.I am still to be notified about the external dvd drive that was supposed to be included in the box but it is not here. The interface looks more sleek than i expected.

Thats great news. So we’re talking about a full R2H being delivered in the UK for 799 pounds? (more than the Q1 though?) Which supplier was it? Can you give us some more details? Would love to hear from you at news [at] carrypad.com so that I can relay the good news via a post.

    Thanks for the comment.

Hey there Steve, hope you are well.I got it from a shop down in tottenham court road, the thing is that about 2 months ago i went into this shop and enquired about a Q1 but the guy suggested me to wait and he said it would come soon, but it didn’t turn up at the time he said (i didn’t mind though, nice lad, helpful)then finally he called me up 2 days ago saying that 5 came into the UK for magazine reviews and he could ask Asus for me for one so I bit his hand off (nearly literally heheh!).
My gut feelings say that it won’t be long until it goes large-scale in the UK,according to him, the products are not on the shelves yet because of the lack of package components (mine hasn’t got the dvd drive which will be posted (i think :) ).Another point of suggestion is the thing that until yesterday, the Q1 was still being sold in the area (which is cheap compared to selfridges and other stores) for 799 with keyboard and foldable bag.But now some shops know the asus is coming (i’ve talked to at least 5 and all they could answer me was, ‘it’s on the way’), they took the whole package down 100 quid in one day to 699.
(there was another shop that claimed to me they had it but when i asked the specs, they said it’s the one without camera, bluetooth and keyboard and it was a trial one for a ‘regular’ customer).
I just called my retailer and he says that Asus is aware that my box didn’t include the dvd drive and will post it to me.He also says he has a backlog order of 10 units but expect to have lots of deliveries between 2nd and 3rd week of October.

    All in all, the R2H is great, it has its’ attached annoyances that i somehow hope would go away with time but it is certainly way over my expectations in terms of things it can do.I’ve also listed the things included in the box for you;

Nylon bag, screen wiping cloth, foldable keyboard, mouse (both of them are usb and not bt), 2 batteries, wires, included too was the usb tv antenna. If i am not mistaken, it’s the same package that was shown on mobile01 or slashgear two days ago, except the tv antenna which has been added in this case.If you need any further information, just mention it. :)

  7. Erik says:

    hi dude !

thanks for all those details !

    i have a couple questions…

    about the TV antenna…
is it a TV tuner ?
what can you do with the TV antenna exactly ?

you said “it has its attached annoyances” ….. what are the major annoyances with this device ?

how much RAM you have ?

did you get a stand in your package ?

about the stylus, is it expandable and confortable to use or just a little short stylus like the one included with the Q1 ?

you said you paid 799 pounds for your R2H. at that price, the external dvd drive was included ?

finnaly, can you tell me what is the INTEL CHIPSET used on the motherboard ? 915GMS ? 910GML ?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the info !!!!!

  8. Chippy says:

Yeah. The TV antenna Q. is a good one. Is it really an antenna?
    DVB-T? DVB-H?
Or just a conversion cable from the 3.5″ AV port?

Should we discuss this further in a forum? My preferred place is Origamiportal.com
Ths sticky thread here would be a good one

  9. Chippy says:

OK. rereading your post, it looks like the TV antenna is a USB DVB-T receiver?

    Steve.

  10. Anonymous says:

Hey guys, i am very bad at technical stuff, the tv thingi is an Asus PD300L.It’s usb but at the other end you have to attach the provided antenna to it.a remote is also included, i’ll be trying it out today as i havn’t had the time to try all the accessories out yet.As for the specs that you asked, the RAM is 700something.The attached annoyance is the fact that i can’t seem to register the fingerprint, plus i am taking a lot of time getting to grips with being able to touch the screen heheh.i was usually quite screeno-phobic.

  11. Anonymous says:

Hey there Erik, the stylus is expandable and yes the external dvd drive is included in the package but they havn’t given it to me yet.

  12. Erik says:

thanks for all the details mate !

  13. Pc_Madness says:

With the fingerprint problem, I believe there are updated drivers that fix that. :)

  14. Anonymous says:

Hey there people, hope you all are well.it turns out it is theDVB-T Any idea how to get it to work? I’ve installed everything but I cant get it work. Any of you know how to set the frequency all those stuff?

  15. Chippy says:

    Hi Anonymous (name?)

There should be an application with the device. You will be able to receive digital TV (freeview in the UK) so you need ot make sure you are in a DVB-T reception ara (most built-up areas are OK.) attach the antenna then go through the auto-tune feature in the software (it will be there somewhere.)

DVB-T is anything from 2-8mbps MPEG-2 streams so it will be interesting to see if the processor can cope with it. I expect it will be OK.

If you need any detailed help, email me at steve [at] carrypad.com

    Steve.

  16. Chris Davies says:

Thanks for the linklove, Steve :) Credit for the unboxing has to really go to Mobile01, is it’s their unit – I just stuck my twopennethworth in about what the pictures were showing, since their article isn’t in English!

  17. Aviruth says:

Hey there steve, i’ve been posting as anonymous for the past few days about the r2h (don’t know why heheh). The tv tuner is now working and i just can’t believe the picture quality, it’s ridiculously good. The only problem with the tuner provided is the long wire attached to the antenna, the small remote also works fine although you have to point it directly at the usb tuner unit.
I just have a problem with the bluetooth now (there doesn’t seem to be one installed on the unit so i have to explore a bit when i get back after a few oints down the pub this evening), the finger print which i had problems with initially, is now working great.

  18. Chippy says:

    Aviruth.

DVB-T is really a good quality stream. It looks great on a UMPC doesnt it!

    Enjoy the pints.

    Steve.

  19. Aviruth says:

    Hey Steve,

Not sure if you are aware of this or not, all the r2hs bought in the UK have had bluetooth problems on them (this assumption comes from the comments i have been reading on the origami project) and now 2 other owners have expressed the same problem as me.Any thoughts on this? Cheers :)

  20. Aviruth says:

    Hey Steve,

You mentioned that the DVB-T is quite good. Are there many of them on the market whereby there is no extra wire attached at the other end of the unit? What i mean is those ones that plug into the usb on one end and has an antenna at the other end so it can be used in limited space like on the train or something?
And also, any idea about the pricing? Thank you :)

  21. Chippy says:

Interesting point about the bluetooth there. If it doesn’t appear on the device list then tehre could be a problem. On my i7210, i have to turn the bluetooth on though before XP sees it. It’s turned on through special softawre thats delviered with the device.

DVB-T won’t work well in a train. Its designed for static instalations. You can buy DVB-T ‘sticks’ which you can connect a mobile aerial to.

What brand DVB device did you get?

    Steve.

  22. Anonymous says:

I think there could be a problem here with the bluetooth in terms of units in the UK so far.As for the dvb device, i got the asus brand but i think the make is called yuan or something.About the bluetooth, do you think it is wise to get in touch with asus about it? because surely it is something concerning assembly as the problem is with all the units and not a one-off.Cheers:)

  23. Aviruth says:

    Hey Steve,

I got an e-mail from the Asus support today saying that there isn’t supposed to be BT in Uk models :( don’t know what to do now.

  24. Chippy says:

    Eeeek.
    No Bluetooth. Crazy.

However the description said blueooth and the box said bluetooth. I guess you’re able to take it back.

    Whats the model number?
I’m working on a contact in ASUS at the moment. Hopefuly should have something soon and then i’ll see if I can speak to them.

    Steve

  25. Aviruth says:

    Hey there Steve,

I went to the retailer today and he said that the issue has been discussed with Asus, basically they acknowledged this as a problem with the units here and they will take the unit back and install the BT, but they will get back to me as to when this will actually happen as it’s the mid-autumn festival in basically the whole of Far-East and the bank holiday means that sus in Taiwan will open again on Wednesday(they also offered me temporary replacement in form of usb BT, which was nice).
I think it’s all down to miscommunication, from what i was told, they rushed the units out as there were lots of enquiries about it. The real confusing thing is that the retailers weren’t even aware of the fact that there are two specs lists on the R2H box, one on the sticker with the SN number (if the customer reads this one then it will say ‘wireless’ &’LAN’ only, no mention of BT anywhere)and the other one is on the side (printed on the box)that lists all the basic components but this list has got all the components including BT written down.Hopefully they’ll bell me up soon about when can they pick it up.Take care :)

    Hi All,

Emailed Asus got the following responce…

    R2H BLUETOOTH ISSUE

the issue of bluetooth has come to my attention.
it seems only 6 units are in the uk
please be aware that these models do not have bluetooth.
if you look at the picture included it shows the spec of the machines in uk.
under the line modem/lan. —- it does not say BT (bluetooth) please contact your retailer as this model does not have bluetooth…
as for the dvd drive that can be obtained from the reseller upon contacting them.

please accept our apologies in this matter..

    Regard

    Asus.com

Bit naff really; Contacted reseller and was told nothing can be done about BT but would send DVDRW and USB BT dongle next week.

Wish I had bought mine from the same supplier as you aviruth…………….

    Cheers
    Jay

  27. Chippy says:

    Hi Jay.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Haven’t you got 14 days to return your goods without reason? (EU law?)

    Steve.

  28. Anonymous says:

Hi Steve, (really ought to register but someone already got my nik!)

I could return it, but its to cool to loose (and quite exclusive at the moment apparently!)

I think I will have a chat with Asus, as aviruth managed to get a resolution, im sure I can wangle something. aviruth also pointed out that it lists Bluetooth V2.0 on the box (never actually noticed it, thanks aviruth)

Asus sent me a pic of a sticker on the other side of the box and stated that it does not say Bluetooth under “Modem/Lan” therefore, tough titty!

Watch this space; Asus here I come!

    Cheers
    Jay

    Hi Steve, (Jay again)

Just fired another email to Asus (before I call them tomorrow), I initially resigned myself to the fact that i would be BT’less, however, aviruth’s success has spurred me on (Tally Ho!)

    Sent this………….

Appreciate the response, however, on the other side of the box it clearly states Bluetooth V2.0

There is currently a lot of chat about this issue on various UMPC websites and at least one other owner confirmed that they will be having the Bluetooth module fitted for them.

This product is generating a lot of interest in the UK market (My company supplys IT equipment, including Asus products) and as it is quite a specialist product, potential customers are greatly influenced by owner reviews and how well issues are dealt with.

I contacted my reseller and they will be sending me a DVDRW sometime next week, however, the best they can offer is a BT USB adaptor for the “Confusion”. The number of USB ports available are limited once the keyboard and mouse are plugged in, I really dont want to take up the last remaining port with something I was lead to believe came built in!

I hope we can resolve this matter amicably, as this issue has really taken the shine off, what I have been eagerly anticipating for months.

    Best Regards
    Jonathan.

Will keep you updated, really dont want anyone else feeling as dissapointed as I do.

    Cheers
    Jay

  30. Chippy says:

I think you’ve got the right approach there Jay.
Let us know what ASUS says.

To me its not clear at the moment as to whether only 6 non-BT device leaked through to the UK or whether the UK market will only get non BT devices. I hope it was just a mistake.

    Regards
    Steve.

    Bluetooth Issue Continues……….

Spoke to Asus this morning (Some dude in Holland)

Explained the problem and was advised that nothing can be done as it would mean a motherboard change and that would be expensive for us!

Had an arguement, asked to speak to Supervisor who had apparently just walked out of the room, put on hold, put on hold again, eventually told that my details would be taken and the UK office would be contacted to see if anything can be done.

Have to say im bitterly dissapointed at Asus, maybe its lack on knowledge on the part of the guy I spoke to or I have called the wrong number (Technical Support/Customer support). I now fully expect nothing to come of that 45 minute conversation/arguement.

I have already emailed them twice since my initial email and had no responce. Looks like im the unlucky one as the two other guys have had positive results.

Going to persevere with it, however, its not looking good at the minute.

Incidentially, the Guy (Arik?) mentioned that he had already spoken to someone about this already and advised them to speak to their retailer; maybe one of you have already had the pleasure of this guy.
    Cheers
    Jay

    Another update……

Just had another responce from Asus (Email)

we have taken on board your query & have mentioned it to the marketing team.
i apologise for the inconvenience you have faced but it is also clearly stated on the box in the spec pic as i before told you that the model you have is not got integrated bluetooth.
please see if the retailer will come to another compromise for you.
    Regard
    Asus.com

    Gets better and better!

    Cheers
