A number of sites are reporting today that the Intel/Yahoo ultra mobile PC is going to be manufactured by Quanta, the same company that is planning to manufacture the One Laptop Per Child / 2B1 in million-piece quantities.
Its an intriguing project with a huge number of questions around it.
Will Yahoo subsidise the UMPC? Will the Go! software really sit alongside the Microsoft Media player and Plays For Sure shops (apparently it runs XP Tablet Edition.) Is it really an Origami ultra mobile PC at all or is it an Intel/Yahoo Ultra Mobile PC? Will I have to sign up for the Yahoo service to buy the device?
The principle of overlay software is not something I’m against at all. The Pepper platform does a good job of simplifying things for a certain type user and WebOS architectures certainly have some advantages. If Yahoo Go! is good and the device is cheap, it could make a great appliance.
