E90 communicator. 800-wide screen. UMPC-like.

Update: E90 Data Sheet now available on the product portal.

Following up on some Nokia E90 rumors…hold on…take a look at this image first and then I’ll continue.

Its obviously just a mock up drawing but its apparently an official Nokia drawing so there might be something in it.

Back to the details though, if you take a look at this convincing post by Ring Nokia (the details have already been pulled from other websites but the info has entered the Google zone so there’s no hiding it now Nokia!) you’ll see talk of an 800-pixel wide screen. Hallelujah! Not only does the design look good but with an 800 pixel wide screen, you’re going to be able to do high-quality browsing.

And there’s more. How about GPS built in, Series 60 software, HSDPA support, dual-screen support (apps can be moved between screens), USB port, dual cams, Micro-SD support, WiFi.

I’ve seen a picture of the HTC Athena and this is going to go head-to-head with it. The Athena only supports WM though so you’re stuck with VGA resolution. If S60 is supporting 800 wide dual-screens, their device are going to reach up much higher in to the ultra mobile PC market. It could be the first UMPC-like device sold through the carriers.

Release dates? ‘Ring Nokia’ thinks there’ll be an announcement in Dec or Jan and release in Spring 2007. Product code is RA-6 if you’re now loading up your Google alerts!

So how will this sit with the Nokia 870 (or even the 770) then? Well it explains why the 770 and 870 don’t have keyboards and why they won’t have cellular data support. It also gives us a clue as to pricing. If the 770 stays at $350, the 870 comes in at $450 (reducing to 350 after the 770 is phased out) the E90 is going to be carry a premium price. $800-$1000 is my guess. But who cares. With a 24 month contract you won’t even know what it costs.

E90, you’re a Carrypad and you know it! I’ll be holding off on updating my phone and data contract until I know more about this one.

More info and comment at SymbianWatch, SMSTextNews and Mobile Magazine. I guess its on Engadget by now too!

Steve.

Biggest problem I see with all Nokia devices is, they are all grossly underpowered!

Every communicator ever produced, every smart phone and even the internet tablet have all had the same thing said about them “Nice, but needs a faster processor to really perform”.

Now, I realise it’s unrealistic to expect a workstation class device in a hand-held form factor… but at least give it enough zip to keep up with the competition!

Communicator addict, I am very exciting by this E90..

I think the E90 is more interesting as Origami for mobilelife.

    Very more…

I’m also pretty excited by this!

If the processing power is enough (see first comment) and the browser supports advanced html methods, its going to be great.

It won’t be cheap but it will be great!

I strongly believe that NOKIA phones are know for slow performance. So, some thing like is really gonna be still slow. Even the software realiability is not there with high end NOKIA phone. i used, Nokia 3220 which is a basic phone and then N70, but the performance is deteriating a lot..
