Here I am siting in the middle of town outside a cafe drinking a nice Cappucino and I’m not using the Q1 Ultra. In fact I haven’t used the Q1 Ultra for about a week now – ever since I installed Ubuntu Mobile on it.
Ubuntu Mobile works fine and the Firefox browser is stable and fast but for some reason I keep picking up the Everun. I’m not sure if its because if the lack of WOW! factor with UME (its not built for end users, rather for OEMs to develop further) or the fact that it`s summer and I really want to travel as light as possible. It could also be because of my ever-rising interest in MIDs or perhaps I cant get away from using XP. Whatever it is, the Everun is certainly proving to be one of the most useful devices i’ve ever had. A little bit more oomph and a slider or clamshell keyboard and it would be perfect.
Maybe I should just shut up and be happy that I’ve got a choice. It’s Friday, the sun is shining and there’s a new Gigabyte M704 waiting for me at home!
For me portability is key. I went to a birthday party last week with nothing but the Everun in my (pants)pocket. Its so easy to be able to do that and have both work and play with me without the need to take a bag or even a jacket with me.
Why are you showing us with what you play. You’re only making us crawl for one. We need fact data!
I’m not surprised — in all your reviews I don’t recall your enthusiasm being as expressive as it was when you first began using the Everrun. I notice that JK commented on his collection of devices and labelled the HTC Advntage as his “most useful” device, based on its convenience in toting around and good screen. I suspect your reaction to the Everrun comes from the same kind of thinking — as the first commenter above points out, portability is the key.
Just sold my HTC Shift after trying it for several weeks — a neat concept but hampered by lack of RAM and the underpowered processor (like everyone says). I’m still looking for my “ideal” UMPC and having to continually revisit the basic question: “What do I really want this thing to do?” …. for me portability is top of the list — and that means pocketability! Maybe the Everrun had the right approach all along(?)
I agree with the author. I find the Everun to be one have one of the best UMPC form factors, and it is VERY portable. I also love its keyboard.
All it needs is an update with some better specs, faster processor and gfx card… that’s it.
It is also a PERFECT gaming umpc, when held in psp-mode :)
The M704 is amazing as well. But I prefer Everun’s form factor.
The Everun was my dream device when I saw Hugo using it as a phone. I stopped thinking about it shortly after release because the phone wasn’t part of the deal. Has that changed? I never have seen it in the US. I only hear about it reading your RSS!
Is the ultimate MID or UMPC even being manufactured?
If not, then what would the ideal specs for the perfect mobility device be like?
in my opinion:
– 4,8″ (1024×600)
– slider keyboard
– long battery life
– enough cpu power (for some older games)
– nice compact design
as far as i can see, there’s currently no such device on the market, but it’s going to come :-)
Does 4,8″ mean 4.8″ or 4″ to 8″?
4.8″ :-)
@kyuss
Actually the Gigabyte M704 seems to fit your description.
not really :-)
A smartphone like the HTC Advantage or PPC6700 is the first thing one must have. They can do most of the things. A pocketable PC like OQO or Everun is nice to have, but you still need a normal laptop or desktop to do serious computing.
To me, a smartphone and a cold and quiet laptop like IBM X20 are the primary. Other things are toys. An Everun or OQO for all is a dream, always a dream, until one day input and output no longer rely on keyboards and screen. As long as we need a keyboard and screen, you have to compromise between portability and productivity and you have to use at least two devices. For now they are a smartphone and a 9″ or 12″ laptop.
