Update: Full review now available.
While I continue to work on (read: enjoy!) completing the full review of the Raon Digital Everun Note, you can enjoy some of the images that I’ve dropped into the gallery.
50+ more images in the gallery.
I’ve also added a ton of testing notes in the forum along with an
FAQ which will probably answer your questions.
Full specifications in the database.
1) Keyboard flaw = I don’t like that the “UP” directional arrow is placed on the same row with the other 3 directional arrows, meaning you need to get use to it in order to move the cursor around the screen. Also not good for playing games (car games for example).
2) It would had been good to have the screen display rotate like a tablet (SC3 like) – I consider there are many situations where you need to rotate the screen.
3) I hope the optic touch will work ok on final revision.
4) Chippy you pointed out on the live USTREAM TV session that the Touch Screen Display has an upper-right corner flaw where you can’t close the windows using the finger(s) – unless you have a pin like finger :). The black edge seams too close to the touch screen. Is this the same for all other corners of the display?
Re 4)
Yes.
I tend to only use the top-right corner and i’ve adjusted the close icon size to be bigger now so it’s not a problem.
You’ll find this problem on many touchscreen UMPCs BTW.
Steve.
Many Thanks Chippy – there are some great shots here that really demonstrate the incredible size of this thing.
Do you have any idea if there will be a factory-fitted 3G option, or if any retailers will be creating their own configurations with 3G installed?
I’m sure there wont be a factory fitted 3G option as Raon would then have to go through 3G testing. Leaving the resellers to add authorised 3G modules is one way round this expensive process.
Steve.
It is ironic that quite a few say it looks like a DS Lite because with the power it has, it may well be able to play a few DS games via emulation.
do you have any actual pics of your daughter using it? i’m curious about her impressions of it from a kids perspective. i was interested in picking up 1 for mine who is about the same age, but from an ergonomics POV i dont want to cause any long term back problems this early in life :)
No. My daughter isn’t really a computer type at all. After two weeks with a DS-Lite we’re still on the first charge! She would rather be painting or playing with friends. A quality I rather like ;-)
Steve.
smart kid ;)
Would have been much cooler if they put an HDMI / DVI connection on instead of VGA.
Is there any point in using VGA these days? I know I never do.
I do! Projectors do.
HDMI, i understand, is not available on the version of the GPU they used. Presumably to save money.
Steve.
Projectors aren’t an excuse. Micro-DVI with DVI-A support will let you use DVI->VGA adapters. That’s why Apple is all DVI (or Mini-DVI or Micro-DVI, depending on the device). It gets them onto everything.
HDMI, though, is also bad. The only reason it’s not as bad as VGA is that at least things will be moving toward HDMI in the future. But, HDMI’s DVI components don’t include DVI-A support, so HDMI can’t convert down to VGA.
So, there isn’t a point in having an actual VGA connector these days. Every host should have some form of DVI connection, with DVI-A support.
What about DisplayPort on such little devices? It’s too early?
Nice pictures – can’t wait to see the review :-)
Put a 3G modem in it, and give it vendor supported Ubuntu … and I’ll consider it.
Add to that a twist screen for convertible-tablet use, and I’ll definitely buy it.
But, if it only has vendor support for windows flavors? No thanks. Not worth it, unless they’re giving it away for free.
Hey chippy I really hope you’ve included a handful of games in your long review :)
Only a mention of games at this stage. Sorry.
Handheld computing strikes back! This is what we mean when we talk about ultramobility. A design that is all screen and keyboard. No cameras on the bessels, no trackpoints and palmrests, just the essentials so that you have min size with max productivity. My Jornada on steroids! Now the question is, when will it be available in US…
Great videos and pictures, chippy, can you get into the bios and if so what kinds of options does it allow?
-Dan
i would like to know if thumbtypng is possible for long periods of time on powersave mode with a smple text editor open given the with the amount of heat on the right side of the device.
looking forward to the review.
Full review is now live!

I would love to see how well GTA SA and Halo runs on this. First at the lowest settings and then with settings a little higher. At the moment, I play alot of games on my Flipstart UMPC (1.1 GHZ Pentium M) but this Everun Note will be at another level.
The first thing I would want to do is to swap the hard drive for a higher capacity one, is 80GB the highest? I am sure I have heard that you can get 120 GB 1.8 Zif drives if you can go up the 9mm size.
Only 5mm. Sorry.
Dont expect great 3d performance under battery power though. About the same as netbooks.
For what it’s worth, I received the following information from the folks at Raon about USofA availability:
“Thank you for your interest on Everun Note.
We are under final discussion with US distributor and launch info will be announced as soon as the deal is closed.”
I heard that too. Explains why Conics arent sendin it out to US / Canada
I have some issues with the device..
If I may be very critical?
1-keyboard:
I agree with above, that the “up” key is not in a favorable position, but what’s much worse is the “/” and “?” and “;” and “:” key, much used in programming and browsing and typing, is set all the way up; which is not handy for one hand typing, or fluently typing.
2- I see no print-screen or sleep button. They could have implemented this with the Fn key.
3- Caps-lock could have been smaller, or in combination with “Fn” + “Shift” on a keyb like this.
I mean,CAPS is probably the least used button on a keyboard overall.
4- I miss num-lock, but like capslock that’s not a too bad loss….
5- I would have preferred the speakers to be more to the outside, which would give a better stereoview, but would probably result in a worse bass response (thinny sound), so that there can be more buttons in the center. Buttons like power or special function buttons (sleep, powersaver mode, LCD/ext. monitor,…)
6- I suspect the key next to the spacebar is the ALT GR key? (or Control)
Finical Internet Page, but it does not really presented right in Net-Tamer.
