26 Minutes with the SX3 uber-netbook

A great overview video from JKKMobile on the SX3. Its attractive, has a good hardware design and impressive set of specifications and features. Does it perform though?

My take-away thoughts from the video are that its a stylish, useable form factor but if its going to use Vista, a 1.6Ghz is the entry point, not the 1.3Ghz provided. I also question the need to include a DVD player when they could have slotted a bigger battery into that space. Slightly too heavy for comfortable one-handed use. Inventec, Kohjinsha, Intel GET THOSE DRIVERS SORTED OUT! People should not be expected to put up with sub-standard drivers.

Yup that’s a great device but unfortunately plagued by the same performance and driver issues than the SC3. :-(

And certainly just like you, I’d prefer the device without the DVD-burner but with a decent HDD instead (that is, 2.5 inches HDD, not sluggish 1.8 inches one) and something lighter in weight. Or a bigger battery as you wish.

Maybe this device would be near perfect with XP and SSD for those wanting an internal DVD drive?

  2. David says:

Agreed with the SSD, WIN XP, and keep the internal DVD-RW drive.

The only sad part is the price, needs to be cheaper.

  3. JP says:

… especially if you start by throwing away Vista and the provided HDD to install your own costy XP license and SSD!!! :-P

  4. TareX says:

It has a DVD player???? A.M.A.Z.I.N.G

Finally. Really battery time is secondary to me. I plug in my laptops 99% of the time.

  5. JP says:

Then maybe you don’t need such netbooks/UMPC but notebooks are fine for you ;-)

  6. turn.self.off says:

could be there is limited desk space available…

thats btw why small computers and multifunction devices are so popular in japan, cramped living areas…

  7. Judge says:

The uk actually has the smaller house sizes on average than Japan its called ‘rabbit hut culture’

  8. turn.self.off says:

    houses maybe, but apartments?

  9. herbinator says:

Still the driver issues put me off and the price!!! Otherwise seems like a lovely little device.

I’ve got an SX3. I’ve been using it everywhere in the house for about a month now. Great build quality, beautiful screen. The stylus that came with it is okay, but it’s so thin that taking note with it is not really possible.

Vista performs fine with 2 GB ram and unnecessary services disabled. Opera is fast as usual. No problem with other programs.

I’ve heard quite a few issues with SC3, e.g battery not charging, bluescreen. I actually haven’t got any of that with my SX3. I wonder why.

The only real complaint I have is the drivers. I got around with PowerDVD codecs for viewing H.264 vids. But gaming is impossible. Not that I wanted to game on it, but it’s annoying with such sub-par performance. This will cause me to think twice, thrice before buying another Intel or Kohjinsha products in the future.

    Good to hear that Grey.
I do love the SC3 form factor and at home, I find the SC3 very enjoyable for browsing over wifi (bad battery life aside). When out on the road though ive had too many failures for it to be classed as a business device. The sx3 would have to be XP based before i considered it for business use.

  12. grey says:

Yup. I also found my SX3 a joy to use around the house (2.5 hours with wifi and 70% brightness). I was afraid 1.25 kg would be too heavy to carry around, but it’s actually not bad at all. Kohjinsha must be doing something right with the form factor of these devices.

But at this price tag, people might find it too high for home use only. (I’m liking it enough, so I’ll keep it.)

  13. citrus538 says:

What kind of games have you tried? It’s too bad about the battery life. The extended battery would be a must for me, but that makes it the same weight as my laptop!

  14. Warner says:

Just curious if anyone can give me an idea of how typing on the sx3 is compared to an eeepc, and also how the size/weight compares. The keyboards look to be about the same. Seriously considering upgrading to an sx… thanks

  15. grey says:

I’d love to help, but I don’t own an eee pc…

  16. uno says:

I noticed you did not talk about the built in TV tuner.
If you look on the top right of the monitor there is an antenna that is hidden.

  17. jkkmobile says:

tv tuner works only in Japan..

  18. Judge says:

As I discussed on another thread if they made the SC3
with a 901 type capacity battery the 1.6ghz atom and a fast 2.5inch hd it would be phenomenal and still be under 1KG. They also need to market these machine agrressivly on price much more! I mean are they executive toys (at £600+) or something that fits in the price band between pda’s and laptops (£200-£300).
