Looking for a netbook? Here are 13 under $399

Posted on 21 October 2008, Last updated on 11 November 2019 by

devices  Brad over at Liliputing has put together a nice list of 13 netbooks (wouldn’t you figure that 5 of them are Eee PCs) that can be bought for $399 or less. Brad mentions that the initial goal price for the original Eee PC was $299, but in reality ended up at $399 when the devices first started shipping. While we might be looking at the same price as that original Eee PC that launched over a year ago, the power and quality (and number of choices) has increased substantially.

While we are on the subject, Matt Dillon from GottaBeMobile.com has noted that Eee PCs are starting to land in retail stores for that original goal price of $299. This is a very exciting time for consumers. Imagine all of those who didn’t need an $800 desktop, but bought something similar because it was their best option. You can now literally walk into your local Target and pick up a small but capable laptop for $299.

No, don’t go Target, they are the 900 with the old Celeron CPU that runs hot and uses too much battery, only 512MB.

Instead, go to BestBuy. For the same $299.99, you get the 900A with the new Atom CPU, 4-hour battery life, running cool and 1GB memory!

i have the 700 eee pc 800mhz 512mb ram and it runs hot. last week i read on umpcportal that best buy was selling the eee pc 900a i went and bought it right away..it is so much better its almost as fast as my acer running duo core and 2gb ram. but i still like my 700 to. the 900a is GREAT.

  3. Eric Qel-Droma says:

Really? BestBuy.com only lists a Celeron model for $379. Are there different ones in-store?

  4. chucky says:

go to bestbuy.com and go to netbooks and click to eeepc 900a and put in your zip code it will tell you where of if the eeepc 900a is at the store. thats wat i did and it was at a best buy near me. i paid 299

  5. Eric Qel-Droma says:

Never mind. I just followed the links in the article, and BestBuy.com doesn’t seem to be listing them all as “Eee” PC’s – several of them are just “Asus Netbooks.”

  6. Fixup says:

That’s very stupid of BB. They simply don’t want you buy this 900A as the price is too low for them to get good profit from. You have to search for “ASUS” for the 900a to show up. I love this 900a. But be aware that the 900HA with 160GB 5400rpm 2.5″ HDD, webcam and 5500mAh battery that runs for 5 hrs for $350 might be even better for you.

  7. ProDigit says:

    900A seems good.
Just make sure you don’t have the 904HD!
That one also is powered by a celeron!

I gotta say I like the way this is going!!

  9. Judge says:

What is the opinion on the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) machines are these generally avaliable yet? Do these count as UMPC’s? These were originally supposed to be $100-$200 wernt they?

  10. Ben says:

    Judge,

I have not used one myself, but while the machines are fairly inexpensive, they aren’t very powerful. They aren’t really designed with the consumer market in mind, they are for developing countries.

  11. davetweed says:

I personally wouldn’t be worried much about the processor but the keyboards were designed for small childrens’ fingers, and were relatively bulky given the size of the screen and keyboard.

    Hi. 13 laptops but 0 slatePC … Why ?

  13. ProDigit says:

EeePc 2G goes for about 150 on ebay.
