One of the MIDs I was impressed with at the IDF in August was the Viliv S5. With a stylish design, excellent battery life and a selection of specifications, it appealed. Even without the keyboard. Launch was planned for Q4 but until a few days ago, we hadn’t heard anything. Through Lazion a few days ago we heard that there was a launch party planned and now Lazion have managed to get a pre launch interview with Yukyung, the makers of the S5.
Specifications revealed in the interview follow what we’ve already got in our S5 info sheet and add an optional 1024×600 screen, Wimax options and news about a 200hrs standby figure which is much more than most other UMPCs and MIDs.
Take a look at the translation for more details and images and look forward to launch details tomorrow.

Ok guys I can read Korean so I will provide the translations:
1. Specifications:
Atom Z series 1.33GHz with 1GB non-expandable memory. The base hard drive uses 1.8 inch size hard drives but the Wibro enabled models will use 1.3 inch size drives.
(WiBro is Korea’s version of WiMAX)
LCD uses a 4.8 inch touchscreen manufactured by Samsung Electronics and will provide 800×480 and 1024×600 resolution. The weight of the device varies between 380-420g depending on specifications and certain models will featuer GPS and DMB.
2. Battery Life
Base battery will provide up to 6 hour battery life and even with hardware accelerated HD video the battery will last 4.5 to 5.0 hours. The standby time is 200 hours. The battery is 3.7V and 6200mAH(22.94WHr)
3. Head and Noise
“Our opinions were that even after extended usage the temperature was reasonable even though it doesn’t have a fan. It was basically silent and can probably pass for PMP device if you want to fool yourselves.”
4. User Interface(the question asks how because of the form factor XP isn’t suitable and what UI are they planning for it):
“We will be planning a Flash 10-based cube interface(motivated off Hancom Linux UI they say), and will provide a virtual keyboard that will fit well with regular software. It’s not complete so we can’t reveal it but we are trying to make an interface which will please users”
5. GMA 500 and its HD video decoding performance:
HD video acceleration of 1080p is possible with hardware acceleration. They plan to provide a codec to support hardware acceleration and will ship with Viliv player and PowerDVD.
6. Expansion/Ports:
Basic audio in/out port and 1 USB. It has no ODD(Optical Disk Drive) so it provides a mini USB port to connect to PC. Also has a connection for external monitor/components.
7. Release date:
“We can’t say the release date because of the volatile currency at the moment(Korean Won to US dollars for example). Estimated release is around January to February”
8. Why only black color?
Only black at the moment but might provide different colors in the future
9. Plan for different products
S7 will be released for business market and some models they can’t yet reveal will be released in the future.
10. XP support
“We have a partnership with Microsoft(along with named vendors like Samsung/LG/Sambo) and can provide XP in our products until October 2010 so you don’t need to worry”
Alright have fun guys!!! I might have to seriously consider UMPC. :D
8.
Ah, missed one point. On #5, provided that the hardware acceleration is there 1080p should be able to play with 40% CPU utilization they say.
Thanks David.
Online battery life should be around 3-4hrs based on what they say and my testing with the wibrain.
Good to know they are still thinking about the S7. I wonder what their plans are for outside Korea. Ill try to find out.
Steve
nice to hear that some of the early devices are making their way to market, but open the doors and let the more in. In the states UMPC are all but dead, they failed to deliver on the promise, MID “here I come to save the day” at least initially looks promising, hope one is under my tree this year :)
There is no 3G(HSDPA) ? is it going to be included later or is there another model?
Sounds nice, if it can truly do HD video it’ll be something i’ll look into.
You know, the spec sounds great, but I want it to run XP Pro. I am sure JKK will find a way. Please keep us updated chippy, this is looking very interesting indeed.
Im write a post the MID s5 is Viliv. From russia.
No VGA-out port! No way!
