The Samsung ATIV 500 and 700, also known as the SmartPC [details] and SmartPC Pro [details] haven’t haven’t been the easiest devices to track through tradeshow and launch events. First highlighted as the Series 5 and Series 7 slates the device names have been cleaned up a little now but we’re sure there’s at least some confusion remaining. Maybe that’s why Samsung have produced an infographic to guide us through the features and differences.
Essentially you’ll be choosing between a mobile, long battery life tablet running on Intel CloverTrail (the ATIV SmartPC / XE500) or a heavier desktop-replacement-capable tablet running on Intel Core i5 (The Ativ SmartPC Pro / XE700) The latter has a higher quality screen.
One thing also missing from the infographic is the information that the Ativ SmartPC Pro doesn’t have a battery in the keyboard. Considering the cost of the ‘Pro’ product, the need for a larger battery and the bigger need for balancing weight in the keyboard, it’s a surprise. Samsung will, no-doubt, point to the Atom-based model as the solution if you want battery life.
Both tablets have a digitizer layer and a pen known as the S-Pen. It comes with a few S Note apps…
Pricing between the two is quite different and that’s obviously not mentioned in the infographic. There’s a Pentium version of the SmartPC Pro too which, according to some retailers, has a 1366×768 screen. In some areas 3G is available for mobile data.
You can compare the two Samsung Ativ SmartPC products in our database here.
As for availability, we haven’t seen evidence of the Ativ SmartPC Pro anywhere yet but the Ativ SmartPC on CloverTrail is already filtering into markets.
Battery life vs Processing power. Which Ativ Smart PC would you choose?

Great article; glad you described the differences like this; it was a bit confusing initially.
Does the non-PRO version REALLY only have a 2G radio in November 2012?!?! -This is just shocking if true. They should just excluded a cellular radio entirely, in that case.
2G radio?!?!…
Adam
I didn’t realize these had cellular radios at all so its a gimme in my case. Your right though, having a 2g radio is about worthless in this day and age. I have read that the 500 is coming to att and im guessing it would have at least hspa+ to make it viable. We will see.
Both Atom and Core versions are available with 3.5G in Europe so I suspect ‘2G’ is a typo.
Glad to finally have it cleared up about the keyboard dock battery situation. Its a shame the 700 doesn’t include one but at least the 500 does. If it didn’t, there is no way it could compete with the acer and asus clovertrail tablets.
Absolutely! It would be a no-go, literally, without the battery in the keyboard dock.
So just to clarify again, I know you mentioned it but the Ativ 500 has a built-in battery in the keyboard dock and not the 700?
I also would wonder if these tablets will come with Microsoft office as full version as some news suggested or just a demo/trial and that we have to purchase it eventually. I think I know the RT versions have it in, but not sure about the intel atoms and i series tablets.
What’s the source for the 500 having a battery in the keyboard? As far as I know neither has a keyboard battery , and they actually share the same keyboard. Look at them.
Hi Scoobie
I have direct info from Samsung that the 700 does not have a battery. I have indirect info from multiple sources that the 500 keyboard has a battery.
I agree that the look of the keyboard docks indicates a similar build.
I’ll try and get a source on the battery in the 500 to make it 100% confirmed.
Chippy
The quoted 15hr battery life in the images above for the 500 series unit with keyboard dock would seem to indicate it had a battery since the tablet gets less than 10hrs on its own.
I would really like to see a keyboard though, Ive actually found the tablet in some local stores but its not an option without the keyboard dock having a battery… if it doesn’t the asus and acer just blow it away battery life wise.
Looks like some youtube videos of the Samsung ATIV Smart PC are already coming out…

Gives a pretty good range of usage examples to get a good idea of overall performance.
There are some S-Pen demonstration videos available too…
Does anyone know if they all have a cellular radio and sim card slot in the US? ATT just announced they will start offering the ativ 500 on the 9th but they are charging $800 and I’m guessing thats just for the tablet. That puts it about $150 higher than other places are charging for the tablet which makes me wonder if its the only one with a radio (3g+lte) or if they all have one (at least 3g). Anyone know?
Also, whats up with the processor speed… every single tech spec ive seen says it has a 1.5ghz clovertrail but all its competitors have a 1.8 and ive seen posts from people that have them that say they are 1.8ghz.
its 1,8 GHz in 500T
So am buyin a tablet shuld i choose tis or an ipad
NO extra keyboard-battery on board of 500 or 700 model!
There been some rumors that later SAMSUNG will launch one keybord (approx 170 usd) for both models and it will include 40 W extra battery!
