iRiver D50N Second Peek.

Posted on 30 March 2009, Last updated on 12 November 2019 by

We reported on the D50N back in Jan (and got the Model number wrong!) but following a tip-off from a reader (thanks Mike) I’ve been taking a closer look at the specs. The images and specs certainly don’t hint towards an Atom powered device but why are IRvier mentioning XP/Vista in their specifications?

D50-1

The IRiver website gives details of content partners too but I don’t recognise any of them from Intels MID ecosystem so its not likely to be Moblin-based either.

d50-spec

Rather than that being a list of OS’ that can run on the device, it’s more likely to be a list of compatible operating systems. If so, what IS the CPU in this?

From a press release in Jan

D50N Multimedia Networking Device with Keyboard
Iriver’s powerful new D50 is a compact, keyboard-based networking and multimedia device that offers full Internet browsing and Instant Messaging in Wi-Fi environments. Featuring a large 4.8″ TFT LCD (WVGA 800*480) with full touch screen interactivity, the D50 lets you enjoy multimedia on the fly, including Video, Music, Photo viewer, Office viewer, FM Radio, Voice Recording, and Dictionary. It provides 16GB Nand Flash (Micro SD Slot) and USB2.0.

Anyone with Korean language skills or contact with IRiver care to take a closer look and confirm/correct? If someone can translate the specs I’ll be happy to put it in the database for easier comparison with the UMID Mbook.

it’s funny with all these iriver gadgets … nobody seems to have real tech specs .

  3. tovarish says:

    http://product.iriver.co.kr/p_d50_tech.asp
says (the last line) that the os is xp or vista 32 so it must be an x86 compatible processor.
all the specs you need are present in that page.

  4. tovarish says:

sorry seems that i am wrong. It probably is the requirement for the host pc.
i wonder why they need a 3500+mAh battery

  5. UMPCman says:

Based on my experience with the iRiver Spinn (a lovely little thing), they mean that their crappy iRiver “Plus 3” software runs on Vista or XP.

Word to the wise. DON’T USE IT! Seriously buggy software.

  6. Vakeros says:

    The little box says:
    PC application: iriver plus 3

Can’t remember exactly what Jiwon means – will try to find out, nut I think UMPCMan is correct, the PC software runs on XP or Vista. This isn’t the devices OS.

  7. crappy says:

“jiwon” means either somebody’s name or “support” in Korean.

  8. Jeff Hill says:

Well since i’m the “iriver” guy around these parts with contacts in the company, i’ll try and find out what processor they are using in the unit. Might take a week or so to get a response but hopefully they’ll be quick.

  9. Chippy says:

Looking forward to that Jeff. Thanks a lot for your effort.

  10. Cla says:

Is there any hope of this being an open platform? It could be my ideal MID, if just I could develop some programs for it that I absolutely need.

I read something about it using widgets:

    http://www.displayblog.com/2009/03/28/iriver-d50n-cute-mid-with-48-lcd/

“The D50N seems to be using an OS that makes good use of widgets. According to iriver the default search engine widget is Google. There is a weather widget and many different ones: Soribada (a Korean site for music), QTV, Filegoori (file sharing), Cinewell.com (VOD content portal with about 3000 videos), etc.
    (…)
You can add additional languages via an online store that iriver is currently building.”

    Thank you!

  11. Chippy says:

As i suspected. thanks for the feedback people.

  12. Jenn says:

Web browsing was actually faster than I expected it to be at CES, but I remember calling it tedious (not sure what I meant by that now). I always assumed it was ARM-based. The SPINN runs a 400MHz ARM 11 CPU, so I figured the D50N was equipped with something along those lines. All of iriver’s Dicple e-dictionaries are ARM-based, aren’t they?

  13. Young says:

It doesn’t mean that the D50N will include a xp, it can be conneted to a
computer with one. because D50N calls it self MID(M something-something
‘Dictionary’) lost of Koreans are having a good laugh LOL
