This just in via The Unwired View. Apparently news is coming out (I assume via the Maemo developers conference that’s happening in Denmark at the moment) that a MID with a 4.2″ touchscreen is due to ship in Q4.
The report comes from The Street who also say that a Nokia Netbook and a device called ‘Project Nautilus’ is also confirmed. If both the MID and Netbook are based on Maemo then we’ve got some interesting times ahead fro ARM-based computing although taking a look at some related Maemo content, it looks like Noia has no intention of expanding Maemo out to netbooks….unless their definition of a netbook is slightly diferent! You’ll find a recent PDF report on Maemo Freemantle in this article.

From the UnwiredView website (qouting Mobile-review):
“These Linux based devices will start the new Nokia high end product line”
If this is true and Nokia is marketing the new IT as a “high-end” device, it will have next to no chance of gaining any marketshare. It needs to be cheaper than the iPhone (and even the iPod Touch) as Maemo has next to no developers compared to the Apple platform.
Considering that the rumoured next-gen iPhone will have a faster browser engine, a faster SoC, significantly upgraded OS, even better developer support, this new Nokia IT is dead before it has been released. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sold fewer N900s than N810/N800s.
Since Mer (the independent port of Maemo) is being ported to the Beagle Board, that means that we’ll have two new Maemo devices soon. The Beagle Board MID you reported on recently, and the TouchBook (which is also Beagle Board based).
So, even if Nokia doesn’t do a Maemo MID, that doesn’t mean we wont have one anyway :-)
Now if we were only getting a Maemo/Mer based phone…
then there is the touchbook, thats basically a modified beagleboard.
and really, this is only news for those that have not payed attention to the fremantle sdk releases…
I dont comment usually on blogs, but this mobile news got me in to it.Anyway great post you got :)
