UMID Mbook Boots to XP in 30 seconds

Posted on 20 April 2009, Last updated on 12 November 2019 by

On of the key features of the UMID Mbook M1, apart from the processing power, form factor and battery life, is the speed of the SSD. What better way to demonstrate it than to show a boot sequence. Here’s proof that it boots in 30 seconds from pressing the button to being able to se the start menu. The OS is Windows XP Home with about 30 processes running. Update: One correction on the video; the UMID weighs 338gm (measured), not 490gm as shown on the video.

Detailed info, including a new gallery and links to review articles and videos are available in the updated UMID information page.

thats quite impressive, guess its not starting much after login then ;)

Chippy, how much does UMID Mbook weight? 315 according to product information page or 490 according to this video?

  4. Chippy says:

Thanks for highlighting that. It does indeed way much less than I have listed in that video. 338gms as measured on my kitchen scales.

Any details on the digital TV tuner(s) built in? I guess it has DMB for Korea, so we should wait for a European release to have DVB-T which should work out of the box with Freeview in the UK, but it would be nice to have it confirmed. Thanks.

  6. Chippy says:

There won’t be a DVB-T version unfortunately. (Latest info)

Thanks. That is a shame, sounded like a good idea.
But on the positive side it is one less reason to wait for an European release.

What is also not clear to me is if the shell will be improved further (http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/25/umids-mbook-m1-gets-sturdier-shell-further-away-from-reality/) or what is already available in Korea is the final product.

The one I have here is a final retail version (i’m told)
I’ll have a post+video up early tommorrow showing the main points to note on the UMID and I include a comment and video about the build quality.

Booting to to dekstop in XP in 30 seconds is not that impressive. (all tho if this is a OOTB setup with no tweaks, it’s not to shabby)

With a aligned partition on a 64 or 128 offset and optimized for 4k writes, you can boot to desktop on XP w/ a MLC SSD in 12-15 seconds. You can even get that down to 9-12 seconds with a SLC based SSD.

This is even on a 600mhz Celeron 3.5″ biscuit board by Adventech w/ 512mb ram.

My Samsung Q1 ultra can be a boot into XP desktop with 30 seconds, and Q1 ultra’s additional software were installed (some required additional software and all drive programs). I have re-configured its XP tablet PC 2005. (a 1.8-inch HDD, processor A110, 2GB of memory, one logon account, no antivirus software).

Symantec’s antivirus client v8.1 can be a lowest delay of only 3 seconds in Q1u, (although an old antivirus but still online automatically updates).

When the daily logon of Windows added an USER account after, which would another delay 2 seconds. As the security matter, an USER account will be a requirement in the daily application, which Administrator account was only maintenance to OS.

Notebook (or UMPC or MID) has some required additional software, but desktop PC can be not have any additional software, both of them were cannot a same speed.

Does anyone know of a third party replacement for the UMID power supply? One much smaller than the official UMID one?
