Smart Devices Q7 Linux Tablet. Fresh pics. (Yes, more!)

Posted on 14 May 2009, Last updated on 12 November 2019 by

Considering the SmartDevices Q7 isn’t a true ultra mobile PC and it’s going to be a relatively slow browsing device, it’s getting a lot of coverage on UMPCPortal this week.

Q7

I find it an extremely interesting device for a number of reasons.

A near-ultra mobile PC for 1/3 of the cost of a PC-based equivalent. The Q7 is going to come in at about $280 including my local taxes (19%) and delivery costs.

To see how close Ubuntu on ARM comes to a full desktop experience.

To see just how much efficient an ARM platform with a big screen and radios is.

Because there’s a huge amount of interest in a low-cost device like this. (E-Reader, coffee-table browser, picture frame, twitter monitor, internet radio, holiday tablet, project work, carPC, Mer/Android development, etc etc.)

– To highlight issues and to create a wish-list to help others build better devices.

As you might have read, we ordered one from Electroworld in China. The website doesn’t look like a safe place to do e-business but after a few emails we decided to take the plunge. Electroworld have been keeping us up to date and have just emailed us to let us know that our device arrived at the office and that it will be despatched in the next 24 hours. In the meantime, we have a stack of new pics. Click through for larger versions or browse all images in the Q7 gallery.

Q7 VS Q5

We also have the real dimensions and weight now. This is a 0.5kg device and at 200x120x24mm, it’s just slightly smaller than a Samsung Q1EX.

That stand looks like it could be a little flimsy… hopefully it’s metal and not a thin plastic.

I want this purely as an LCD ebook reader. I hate eInk! I can’t read on it in the dark and the wedge lights ruin the supposed better screen of eInk. I’ve been waiting for a device with the right form factor, decent batter life and a decent eBook ability for a LONG LONG time. If they can deliver these for real – I will buy 2.

It’s shipped. EMS tracking tells me its left Shanghai sorting center. I guess it takes a few days in German customs though so we’re on track for a Wed or Thurs live session.

Well, find this website by googling smartQ, I am Chinese, It’s on sale right now in China, according to the review of our portable device community, it is slow as Q5, and the company is not capable to develop a good software platform, the good news is they are very open for Mer community to redevelop the fireware, they opened the source code to the community, I think it would be a great toy for geeks.

It looks like someone has already got their hands on one.

I’ll definitely order one if it lives up to even half the expectations.

  11. Quint I says:

Engadget China also got their hands on one, and according to them, it only supports up to a 16gb sd card, that’s a little disappointing.
