There have been rumors flying about for a while now that the X70 UMPC [#2 in our charts today] includes the voice-capable version of the Huawei 3G modem so when Viliv sent me a replacement for my pre-production X70 sample the first thing I did was to check the 3G hardware and software.
Sure enough the installed software includes a phone dialer and the hardware is wired up to the mic and speakers. It’s a phone! Video demo below…
UMPCFever also demonstrate it on video.
Viliv have been very quiet about the feature, Dynamism say that it’s unsupported and I can’t confirm that retail versions of the device will have dialer capable software but it does seem that all the hardware will be wired-up and ready to go on the X70. One question remains about Wifi and BT capability because on this version of the Viliv Manager software, enabling the 3G disables the Wifi and BT meaning you can’t use a BT headset or use the device as a 3G/Wifi router. However, a little birdy has told me that this is just a software issue and that different versions of the manager software would allow simultaneous use. That’s something I haven’t tested out yet.
For reference the software is Huawei Mobile Partner 11.300.08.00.voice. Note: I don’t have a copy of the software.
In related news, the X70 EX orders from Dynamism have been delayed.
New article: X70 EX 3G UMPC Supports Voice (Unofficially) http://cli.gs/JMMTt
Now THAT”s a bonus
Your wife needs a new mobile phone number now xD
Her number is public, as is mine. Otherwise i’d be in trouble!
Thanks for the info. I hope Viliv will move forward with this venture. I think there is a market for XP deice that also handles voice calls.
After reading many forums, this is a device that a lot of people have been waiting for, for many years because of its form factor, battery life and data and voice connectivity. Viliv offers a new work and communications paradigm to the people of the world. With a little imagination one can only see what one can do with this device.
I have been waiting for this ever since 1993 after I watched a series of ATT commercials. If you want to see the ATT commercials, check out the links below.

I would ove to hear what others think!
Hi Chippy – I’m really struggling with a decision – I’ve ordered the S5 but am really concerned that the screen will be too small for outlook and office use. I like your reviews and would welcome your opinion… S5 or x70?
I am not chippy. :)
But In my humble opinion, if you are o.k with high resolution of Sony Vaio P, it should be O.K with viliv S5. Actually, it is same size considering different size of LCD. If you think that you feel uncomfortable with Sony Vaio P, X70ex should be better choice for you.
Anyway, supporting the voice capability of X70EX should be great thing. How about the S5 ? Is it support the voice capability with EM770W modem?
Hi Stellar. I have both. Both require a bag in my opinion so the bigger screen of the X70 makes UMPC life more comforatable. SD card slot and mic too. On screen keyboard is usable on the X70, not so usable on the S5 IMO. Go for SSD on whatever device you choose!
Chippy.
Thanks Stellar – any advice is welcome! I’ve not actually seen the Sony Vaio P in the flesh but if they’re similar screen res, I’ll go in search of one!
I’m not sure I understand this article. Does it mean I can get a ATT SIM with a voice and a data plan and will be able to use both? I know data is ATT 3g only but what will happen if I get a T-mobile SIM? Would I be able to use their voice feature and their edge network? Thanks.
Some data contacts don’t allow voice but in general, if you get a 3G sim card with voice and data and it supports EU frequencies (someone correct me if i’m wrong but T-Mobile uses a non-EU frequency) then it will be OK. AT&T i think is the only option.
Chippy.

Exelent video.. Just tell your wife when you will call her on a video review :-)
I have a Huawei E156 USB doogle that I use on my Sony UX380N and my HP TX, I made some “google job” searching if my E156 supports voice calls. For my surprise, yes, it do voice calls.
Now I need a “.voice” version of Huawei Partner program to test/use (just a cool geek demostration, I dont think that someone will make a real use this feature :)
Rogerio.
I prefer it when my wife gets a suprise call!!!
i wonder if i can easily remove the router on the x70 and put it into the s5 and place calls with the S5??? doable?
I meant remove the modem on the x70 and put it into the S5 and use the s5 as a phone?
both mini pcie?
maybe possible?
the S5 and X70 sold in Singapore will have 32GB SSD, 3G and voice, launching Aug 19th…
Good thing there is a shortage of IPhone 3GS because I decided to get the S5 instead of waiting for the 3GS.
I search Huawei Mobile Partner 11.300.08.00 voice.
Where it is found?
Thanks
Please, share with us :)
Rogerio.
I don’t have it. I’m hoping it becomes available when Viliv post the X70 EX drivers in 2 weeks.
Simple but overlooked question: can you RECEIVE calls?
Does anyone know if there is a replacement for the Mobile Partner Software that come with the Viliv, maybe a more feature rich one for calls and other integration
