OQO Model 2+ is a Collector’s Item?

oqo2plusThis is strange. I was thinking about the 1.86Ghz version of the Atom CPU this morning and wondering why there hadn’t been many devices using it. The OQO 2+ was the only device I’ve ever tested with it and it worked well, even with windows Vista!

The first story I find on Yahoo News this morning is one about the OQO 2+ sales on Ebay. We’ve already reported on one that sold for 4.5K after the company went down but it seems that there’s another one on ebay now, presumably coming from an ex-employee or partner that had production samples. Bidding for this one has already passed the 5K mark which is rather stupid considering this isn’t a one-off device and if it’s from the same production run that I tested will have a few issues. Battery life, heat and noise weren’t quite 100%!

“It’s not a final production sample and therefore it’s impossible to talk about battery life, noise and heat with any degree of accuracy. I have been a little disappointed that the device wouldn’t reach 3hrs online on a single charge but I also get the feeling, after looking at detail at power drain on various components, that there’s another 10-20% to be squeezed out of the device” [One-week with the OQO 2+ review]

More info and links here for people that are thinking of buying. Oh, and if you see this sticker on it, it’s the one I had! [Maybe that serial number helps to ID the device on Ebay?]

Yup, I’ve seen some OQO 2+ being sold on EBAY at incredible high collector’s item price…! Even though the OQO 2+ could have been a pretty nice alternative to the few umpcs/mids available today, as chippy pointed out, these are not production units, and thus there are most likely bugs that were never ironed out…! Not sure if a $3000 – $6000 EBAY “investment” on the now defunct OQO 2+ would pay off some day? Personally, for support purposes, I’d rather stick with whatever is still available today…in order to avoid even bigger headaches when the unit isn’t working the way it should…unless the unit is dirt cheap, and you can live with no support…! (e.g. there might be some good deals on the classic EVERUN/Note on EBAY, perhaps some flipstarts as well…and Sony UX series).

the people that bought this will piss their pants when the chinese company thats after the rights to this unit put it into production,if you check out some threads on oqotalk there is a chance this item will still be made,i am the biggest waster of cash on umpcs and i cant even justify the outlay for an untested machine with no support or repair service, looks like telepan is going the same way as oqo.i have an oqo e2 which i use everyday with the cpu throttled down to 400mhz as i am afraid it will die soon, was such a huge investment new with all the trimmings.umpcs are becoming a minefield,i still love the form factor.

    I think OQO 2+ is collector’s item.
It is a first PC with OLED display. And all the previews and reports mentioned that the screen is pretty awesome.

I am waiting for first laptop with OLED screen (it probably is going to be Sony, the screen from their 10″ XEL-1 OLED TV looks read for small laptop to me).

Frankly I don’t understand Sony’s policy. Nobody is going to pay $1500 for crappy little TV. But this screen would sell like hotcakes if it was part of a laptop.
