It’s only an early hands-on of the Archos 9 (they’ve got to get those first articles out quickly these days) but Gizmodo ends up with a positive vibe about the device. No word on battery life, performance or tablet features but there’s a hands-on video walkthrough. (Below)
Take-away thoughts from the video…
- Windows starter edition. (No tablet features?)
- Optical mouse is great to see (can be great depending on how well calibrated it is)
- Is that an Archos on-screen-keyboard?
- It’s running a 6.5mbps 720P video in Gizmodo’s video. I’ve never seen that video working on even a 1.3Ghz Atom. Maybe Archos have included better drivers/codecs.
- Start price $499. Probably not including 3G. Viliv may have to re-think the X70 start price of $599.
- 620gm can be quite heavy with such a wide device when held in one hand. (I experienced this problem with a PepperPad although the optical mouse will really help here.)

New article: Archos 9 hands-on at Gizmodo. Positive. http://cli.gs/8vbYt
Love it.I’m sold if the battery life is acceptable. The fact that they don’t mention any gives me hope it’s more like the 3 hours stated earlier in the video (Archos Event in Paris)(http://tinyurl.com/nyphc4).
RT @chippy New article: Archos 9 hands-on at Gizmodo. Positive. http://cli.gs/8vbYt
now release that in a 4.8″ version…. with a slider keyboard…
That would be even better. ;)
Chippy, i know, you like to lower the weight :-)
Archos 9 weights “less than 800g”, but not 630gm

Well spotted. Updated the product page.
Thanks
Nice display normal amount of ram normal processor normal web cam windows 7…. Im not sure if i like that or not… No keyboard!? For me that would make it a no buy i need my keyboard no matter how terrible it is i still want it on there altho i wouldnt like to see the Q1 keyboard on there… That was absolutely terrible! Usual webcam fairly nice hard drive for me the size is to big i like something more the size of the OQO model 2 but for others this will prbly be a good thing but not for me… Lastly…. AMAZING PRICE!!!! Umpcs have been coming down in price alot lately! 499$ is great! Just a few years back mine cost me 2000$!! Wonderful how far we are coming in the umpc world. Oh and once again hello steve chippy!! Cant believe its u! Ur king of the umpc world in my opinion!
Thx
please stop complaining about the lack of a physical keyboard. a keyboard will definitely increase the weight of any device due to the extra hardware. also there are plenty of those around and what we’re really missing are slates with onscreen keyboards. if the keyboard is a dealbreaker for you, don’t look at this device and move on. on another note, i would love to know the battery life on this. i just got a x70 and it runs 4-5 hours fine. the article still mentions 620 grams that’s lighter than the x70 which is already heavy for one handed use.
Nice device, now crunchpad have even more competition, price is an deal breaker.
sorry that i have to correct you chippy you can get hdvideo running smoothly on a 1.3ghz atom. look at my video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeOfdS_ihsU
this is a eking 1.3ghz atom 1gb space and windows 7 rc running. The video is 1080p. its a piece of 10mins which has 1.2gb and avidemux tells me something about 14mbps. sure it stutters at some times but this was the old gma 500 driver with the new one it should run smoothly. this is only possible when using powerdvd’s hardware decoding codec in combination with mediaplayer classic hc. but it works.. :-D
Avoid Archos like the plague .. their build quality is poor and their customer service is worse .. I kid you not .. check out my broken Archos 5 which I used for a total of 12 hours
look the battery is so swollen it’s bust out of the case (breaking the LCD in the process)

6 months down the line I’m no closer to getting it sorted
Avoid Archos keep your sanity
TokyoRob:
That is really a shame. It looks like you put the Archos in the washer, then used the dryer to dry it out! What does Archos have to say about giving you anew one? Obviously a repair is out of the question. Have you posted the pictures on the Archosfans forum?
I am glad you posted this picture up. My Archos 605 had the same problem last night. I wasn’t there at the time it busted so I went insant trying to find the reason. And BTW, I only use this archos a few times too. What a wasted!!!
I am trying to see if I can use the hard drive any other way. I bought the more expensive one with 320GB.
Archos gave me the runaround …. oh I can’t deal with this just let me forward this to the correct department .. no contact .. BS
Some of the Archos people are good but their hands are tied I think
The photos are on ArchoFans but they can’t really do much except tell me that it sucks
I did ask Charbax as I thought that he may be able to help as he’s Archo’s No 1 fan and may know someone that could help .. but he told me just to post on the board so I did..
Basically the Archos is scrap the battery has ruptured and as you can see it eating in the metal coating
It’s costs 300USD for replacement is it really worth all the bad press not to replace it??
Somewhere along the road Archos lost their way. I bought a Jukebox 20 from them around 2001, then an AV340, then a PMA430. I was very pleased with all of them, the latter two are still working. But they started to go seriously downhill with quality during the 604 days, and the fall has been quite steep ever since. It will be interesting to see what happens with the next generation because they have bitten their faithful customers once two often, except Charbax who continues to support them the way fans in Chicago support the Cubs (pardon the analogy but as a lifelong Phillies fan I have two World Series champioships in the last 100 years vs. the Cubs zero. Kind of like looking at an Archos 5 versus an iPhone. Gotta love the underdog, but…).
its tough but I do like archos but I don’t know If I can buy another one ..
Then Archos started its seemed like you have a group of people that cared about the products and the users .. But now … I can only assume that the bean counters have taken over ..I have seen it before the short sightedness of cutting C/S and outsourcing it, Making users buy plug-in….
The last thing you do is piss off the core users…. just look as the archosfan forum to see that people aren’t happy
I didnt say it was a dealbreaker for everyone just me… I dont like on screen keyboards because they take up screen space i just like to have a physical keyboard even if it makes it heavier
