Fujitsu has introduced the Lifebook UH90 Ultrabook which comes with a Haswell processor, is 15.5mm thick, has a gorgeous red finish and features a stunning 3200 x 1800 screen resolution.
The UH90’s centerpiece of course is its screen, with its heady resolution of 3200 x 1800 providing a pixel density of 262ppi but Fujitsu also has another trick up their sleeves by managing to squeeze the 14″ IGZO touchscreen display into a chassis that is about the same as for a 13″ model. Fujitsu also adds what it calls “Super Glide Coating” to the display for a better touch experience with Windows 8.
Along with the display enhancements the UH90 also has a 1.6GHz Core i5-4200U Haswell processor with Intel HD 4400 graphics and a 500Gb hybrid drive with solid state cache, and with a thickness of only 15.5mm Fujitsu claims this is the thinnest Ultrabook available.
Its expected to go on sale from June 28th in Japan but no word on availability in other regions.
Nice to see IGZO screens being used. I wonder how much lower the consumption is compared to a regular 3200 x 1800 LCD screen.
I wonder mainly how well it scales down.
Fujitsu seems unaware, that most Windows software fails to support upscaling for higher resolutions properly, with text overlapping, UI elements disappearing, distorting or otherwise becoming difficult or impossible to use.
Might be great for photoshop and large spreadsheets though.
Windows 8.1
Windows 8.1 does nothing for ISV applications on windows that aren’t scaling well.
Windows itself scales up and down fine since Windows 7.
Its the applications we actually do our work in that are the problem.
I am not a big fan of Fujitsu, but this model looks pretty interesting. While we have displays with high ppi in all decent smartphones, in laptops they are still rare. Finally something is changing in that matter.
And what about WEIGHT?!?!
It seems that after the first pack of ultrabooks, no one cares about weight anymore.
since when are 15.5mm the thinnest ultrabook available?
I have a new theory on why manufacturers are suddenly pushing ultra-high resolution displays.
Computer Sales are not just low because of phones and tablets.
Its also because Microsoft has failed for the last 7 years to produce sufficiently bloated code to eat up all the spare CPU cycles Intel keeps making available with new chip generations.
The result is, that even 7 year old computers are perfectly capable of doing today’s office work, eliminating any real NEED to buy new systems.
So now, purchases are limited to those who are gamers, scientists or otherwise feel they must have the latest.
A real drag for computer manufacturers.
But ultra-high resolutions will at least eat GPU cycles like crazy, causing lagging displays, higher temperatures, more fan noise, shorter battery life and a complete inability to play even the simplest of games.
Given how big computer games are, this is the solution! Even Farmville players will have to upgrade to a new system with a fancy Nvidia GPU, cause Intel’s chips, new and old, just can’t hack it alone at 1800p – GT2 and GT3 not withstanding, at a TDP of 15W, they get throttled to being hardly any better than Ivy Bridge’s HD-4000.
Voila, we’ve created a real need to upgrade in a year for anyone who bought or would like to buy anything with an 1800p display.
