Like women with shoes, geeks can never have too many gadget bags.
Over the last few days I’ve been testing out the Ultimateaddons netbook bag from Ultimate Netbook. Its a 700gm bag with a split, padded central area and additional front and rear pockets.
I’ve tested it with a Medion Akoya Mini (Aka MSI Wind) which is 260mm wide (10.2 inches) and it fits snugly. Anything wider than 270mm could be a problem but that’s enough for almost every netbook with a 10.2 inch screen. I’ve also tested it with a Fujitsu U820, U20 power bank (recommended, also from Ultimate Netbook) and threw in all my normal bits and pieces. Total weight will all that kit (over 10 hours of computing!) was just 2.6kg. It makes a perfect conference and coffee-shop bag.
I checked out all the seams and zips and it seems very well built. Strong materials, good zips, magnetic flap. The central pocket is well padded and the shoulder strap is comfortable. In terms of styling its pretty good too.
The best thing about it though is the price. Under 20 pounds for a well built bag makes it a must-have in my opinion. Shame that it only comes in the khaki colour. I’m sure black, red and blue colour would go down well.
Ultimate Netbooks are in the UK and can ship Europe-wide. More details about the Ultimateaddons 8.9-10.2 Netbook Shoulder Bag Case can be found on their website.
Netbooknews.de have posted a video via (PDA.pl) from ARM that shows the Wistron Netbook, a thin, Sony Vaio-like netbook baed on the Quallcom Snapdragon CPU and running Linux. Jump to the action at 2:32
I really realy want to get my hands on a snapdragon-based device as soon as possible. I want to feed back to you all on the real-world browsing speed and capabilities.
As I was reviewing my keyword searches on the social network Twitter this morning (I use Particls.com) I came across a really interesting question. @phabulosa asks: “Really want to know why Moblin can boot that fast and how instant-on Linux works. Someone can tell me? inch
We haven’t actually brought you the good news that Moblin 2, Alpha 2 has been released yet so before I dive into the above question, let me give you a brief update on changes over the Alpha 1 release.
It’s the polar opposite of what you usually see on the portal. A mobile PC built around a huge keyboard with a tiny screen tacked on to the side. Obviously this is not quite your mobile productivity box (unless you want a kneck injury) but it’s an interesting option for the home. The video below was shot a few weeks ago at CeBIT in Hannover. After reviewing it, i’m quite sure that the RF ports you see will be for wireless HDMI antennas.
The big question now is what to call this category of devices. Sofasurfer?
Laptopmag.com seems to get their hands on netbooks before anyone else these days. Not only did they get a Samsung NC110 before the unit was announced, but they had enough time to review the whole thing and record a nice video overview that compares the new N110 to the old NC10.
Welcome to this week’s netbook roundup. In this space every Monday I’ll highlight netbook news items that might not need their own individual posts but may still be interesting.
Rumor: Verizon and HP Readying Subsidized Netbooks Cheap netbooks due to subsidizes from cell phone carriers are fairly common outside the US, but it seems like HP might be teaming up with Verizon to offer a discount on a netbook if the consumer wants to start a Verizon contract. If this comes to fruition, we’ll probably see a USB WWAN card offered with the netbook, but I think most of us are hoping for a more elegant internal solution.
Just a few weeks ago, Woot featured the Asus Eee 701 netbook on their Yahoo branded site, shopping.woot.com. Today they are back with more netbooks. The Asus Eee 900 is available from shopping.woot.com today for just $179, available in black or white.
Head over to shopping.woot.com soon if you want to buy one, this deal will only be available through the end of the day or until they sell out!
I thought their description of the product was funny, here is an excerpt:
